I am going out tomorrow and was wondering if anyone had some advice as to where to try it. I haven't seen any recent posts on it lately. I know it's probably a little slow right now but I just like getting the boat out  . At this point I'm thinking Kelly point area. Any other suggestions/reports? Thanks.

Sunday my partner and I had 3 keepers (1 released) by 10:15 or so on fresh smelt. We turned left onto the Columbia and anchored just a little downstream from the point in the mid 70's depth range. The guys closer to shore did not do as well. There are lots of fish around right now and they are in beautiful condition. Good Luck!

Don't forget earthworms. This time of year (rains) they make a great topper for your smelt.
Kelley Point is loaded with fish and as mentioned above they are in great shape.
Good luck.

Z-man, easy thing to do. Run the leader through the smelt as always. Before you pull the hook up into the mouth thread the hook 2 - 3 times through the worm and loop the egg loop over one or both loose ends. Pull tight and pull the hook up in to the corner of the smelts mouth.
If you do not snell your sturgeon leaders then bait the smelt thread the worm on the hook and tie on the worm with stretchy thread.

Pilar, I've wanted to try smelt with a worm topper...I'm curious...do you tie it on?

I'm going sturgeon fishing tomorrow too!... the 'punch bowl' at Kelly Point.
It's not "a little slow", in fact, according to Pilar, it's red hot right now. I've been there several times lately, and several times with him in the past. I almost never leave this hole without a limit and this is the peak of the season.
As Pilar would say, the most important three most key factors with regards to sturgeon fishing are "location, location, and location". This punch bowl hole is very small but the deepest water in the Kelly Point area at just over 100 ft. Precision anchoring is key. In fact, to my knowledge, the only deeper water on the Columbia is the Trojan hole.
I'll be anchoring right around noon. My boat is an old ugly blue and white 18ft fiberglass runabout with a tall blue camper top. I'll have one male, one female, and one canine passenger. If you have a radio, hale me and I'll dial you in. I answer to "Adrianna" on ch 16.
