I am going to fill about 16 reels with Kevlar 65lb line for halibut fishing. Would like to have the visabilty of the western filament yellow, but have heard good things about the power pro. Any input would be great. Would like to get it right the first time as I'm looking at about 5000yards. Thanks Gene

I have used Power Pro in the Lighter weights. It was o.k. but I like Cabelas Rip Cord.I now have a order in for Rip Cord 30lb (8 pound test diameter) for my Plug Rod.This will replace the Power Pro. As you see I go higher in test on these types of lines. All of these types of line seem to me to be more suseptive to nicks, gill plates, sharp scales, getting wrapped in the treble hook and I've even had my line cut by buddies mono. I use 80lb (30 lb diameter) Rip Cord on my Sturgeon Rods and one rod that I use to flat line with Quickfish for Salmon ( Fall or Sprng). I do use a 40lb mono leader attached to a swivel for the Quickfish and 80lb Tuff Line leaders for my Sturgeon setups.I can't say for the salt water effect on any of these lines but unless I break it all off it lasts 3 years. This offsets the cost of of the line. Cabelas has improved the Rip Cord (it was already good ) and the new Rip Cord Si/Plus looks like a really good line. A friend has it on his Plug Rod and it works really well(solid hook-ups on Steelhead). They have large spools of the line (400yds I belive) which would be good for you since you are filling so many rods.. Sounds like I'm selling Rip Cord but it's been the best for me and I have tried a lot of them. Tuff line my second choice. Remember if you have used 60 lb mono than I would go 80lb maybe more ( diameter of the 80lb synthetic would be half that of 60 lb mono). You do have to break it of once in a while however. Finding a knot you can tie easily quickly and will hold without slipping is a chore with all these lines but not impossible. Hope this helps.
Tackle,
I am on Pro Staff with Power Pro but don't fish the heavier lines...I could get some references for you though if you would like...I would imagine I could get numbers for these folks.
let me know,
Jim

Jim:
Was looking for info on the choices of kevlar lines for halibut fishing. need bulk spools of at least 1500 yard spools or more. Could go with All Sports or Englund Marine. Was interested in the hy viz line. We fish 100 fathom (600') so need a bunch of line for 15 or 16 reels. Thanks Gene

Hi Gene. The power pro #80 in Army truck green is what I'm using. I have a 4/0 with 450 yds on it that has been fished 3 summers in the Ocean. Halibut at 700', Tuna and even giant sturgeon in the gorge. The only way it comes off the reel is snag and bust off. No stretch and it seems to not wear other than the color fading to a lighter green. The line is round and packs onto a reel nicely. I think this is the only color it comes in. Cost was $.08 a yard at GI Joes over the counter.
No doubt you can beat that buying in bulk. Only bad thing is it is harder than hell to break off if you snag.

I've used 100# braided (can't remember the brand) up in Alaska when I ran halibut charters and almost the only way to break it was to tie it off on a cleet and let the swells pop the line. Even though it was hard to break I wouldn't fish in deep water like that without it. Our average depth was 300 feet.
Power Pro comes in a Hi Vis.

LikCorky,
You say that the lines seem more suseptive to nicks and abrasion. That's because you're using line that is the diameter of 8#. If you were using something with the diameter of 12 or even 20 you wouldn't have that kind of trouble.
The first time I used a braided line it was 35# and it kept breaking off when I got hung on the bottom. It would bread before my 40# mono leader.
I pitched that stuff and now never use less than 50#. 65 is my standard.
Useing Power Pro or TUFF line in 65# I've never had the line break with: an over size sturgeon, it's been wrapped around logs and pillings with chinook on, many times wrapped in the trolling motor prop with fish on, anchor ropes, line wrapped around other lines or wrapped around a treable hook of a Kwikfish. Some times it's come out abraded but never broke.
