Pursuit,
I've been fishing the west side of Vancouver Island every summer for about the last 12 years. I switched to the single action reel and long rod after a couple trips up there and am sold on them for downrigger fishing, mooching, and jigging buzz bombs.

For downrigger fishing I use a 10.5 ft. Shimano CC-405pm with a Shimano 2000GT reel. Excellent combo for both chinook and coho, and reasonably priced.

For jigging and mooching I use a lighter outfit, a custom 9 ft. rod rated for 8-17 lb. test and a Shimano 1000GT.

For open water fishing they're the best thing going. Much more fun than the typical level-wind reel and meat stick guys usually use in the salt. I wouldn't, however, use them at buoy 10 or other crowded fisheries. Not enough power to quickly land a big fish.
Also, I don't think they would work well if you're set up with a diver.

Email me if you want more info.

regards.....Mike

After watching a few Fishing with Shelley & Courtney shows I thought I'd like to try a single action reel, and canadian type rod ,in our local salmon & steelhead fishing.Well after checking into it,I found out this stuff is very heavy.A Shimano 2000 mooching reels feet, won't fit any of the reel seats of my loomis rods, these are a big reel. How can I gear down in size? Well after looking around my fishing shop, I found a new G.LOOMIS Syncrotech GL 6-7-8 wt. fly reel I've never used.I then loaded it 2/3 to 3/4 full of 15# Izor line high vis......well over 200 yards.Know what about a rod? I didn't want to screw up any guides on my loomis fly rods, so I looked in the G.LOOMIS catalog and came across their sk - series rods , in the steelhead rod section. The Skamania style spinning rod is designed for Great Lakes tribs drift fishing, with a long foregrip and a short short rear grip......like a canadian style mooching & trolling rod. The rod I chose was a STR1173S-SK, it's 9'9" rated 6# TO 12# line ,fast action and comes in a GL3. This was in the spring of 2000 and I used it all summer downrigger fishing a Drano ,for Steelhead and later salmon, and it worked great .....a total blast. I caught steelhead up to 16# and Chinook up to 24#.Next came trolling for Coho at the Klickitat river , just flat lining warts..worked great ,LOOMIS fly reels drag is the smoothist I've ever fished. This outfit worked so well that I put together another one ,for last years Springer season, I chose a new LOOMIS STR1085S-SK 9' rated to 17# line, med heavy fast action rod,in a GL2.For a reel , I choose the next bigger size LOOMIS SYNCROTECH fly reel in 8-9-10 wt. Loaded with 15# Izor line high vis......The first day I tryed it,March 24th 2001, I was flat lining a mag wart at Drano and fit a 29# springer, my largest of last year .What a fight..... battle.. strong fish..great rod.. smooooooth reel.Too much fun.

Earlier this week there were a couple Berkley Technique series Center Pen rods on E-Bay. These rods are designed for use with single action reels.
I ended up winning an 11' rod rated for 12-25 lb test. It is a Berkely Technique Series. This is the ultimate float rod for salmon. I hope we have another season for silvers outin the salt this year, I plan on using that rod for mooching.

Thanks all for the replys, my lovely wife got me a downrigger for Christmas and I am ready to give it a try. I did get a chance to fish with a friend of mine out on the big pond for Silvers last year we only had one single action rod and reel setup on board it sure looked like fun.

Has anyone out there fished for Salmon with a single action reel? I under stand they are used up North in Canada and Alaska out in the sound and in the salt. Sometimes using them with a downrigger. Any information one mite have on rods and reels or technique would be greatly appreciated.

I have a couple of them out in the garage. Shimano 2000 reels and long mooching-style rods. They are great for fishing live bait in deep saltwater spots like the lighthouse at Campbell River, and also work well in other mooching situations. But I never seem to use them in freshwater.
