Check with Fisherman's Marine. Ask Tim Rooney as he has been there longer then anyone else. I am sure they have them stashed away somewhere. Another place would be any of the tackle shops in Newport. Usually that shop down on the bay front, Englander's I believe it is called. I used to get them at the skin divers shop across the bridge and down toward the south beach boat ramp.

Thanks for the information. I'll try again at Fisherman's. Looked last time I was there but did not find them.

The South Beach Marina store always has them. Gold hooks, green or orange paint, tiny white wings made of (ewww) fishskin, 6 jigs to a rig. The brand is Japanese, Daichi or something like that. It's about $5 a pop. As mentioned above worth the money, 6 on at once, all day long. They work in the ocean too!

Where would you get the stuff to make the white wings? The rest of the stuff is pretty common.

There is another brand that has orange heads painted on the hooks and tiny gold threads on the snell.

Catch and Eat, rcl187 is right, the Japanese jigs work really well. I've found that herring can be as fussy as shad. Try Gart Sports in the Clackamas Promenade. I've seen them there before. I've had good luck with the white wing/green bead combo.

Just courious how some of you tie your herring jigs. I have not ever seen herring jigs in our local stores or at the coast.

What size hooks and color lure are you using. I want to get some tied up for the run at Yaquina Bay coming up. I think it will be important to stock up on herring since there is so much talk of a shortage.

Any help would be appreciated

I have never had much success tying herring jigs. Most sporting goods stores should carry them-only they are labeled baitfish jigs. There are several types but the best ones are made by a japenese company and have pretty small silver hooks. They have light white/clearish wings and NO beads. They'll run you about $4.50 each which is twice the price of most others but their success makes up for the cost.

Thanks everyone! Going to pick some up today. I want to get a couple of rigs. Thought this would be a kick in the pants for my kids to do. Not many fisheries that you can hook up more than two fish at a time left out there.

I have never done this before so it will be fun for me too!

Fellow fishermwan
I have no experience at this.Is a boat required to jig for the herring? Thought I would give it a try. Were in Newport bay do you fish for the herring? Thanks in advance!

a boat helps, but there are several docks around Newport that you can catch them off of. Try off the south beach dock near the boat launch. Used to be a couple of docks on the bay front toward the Embarcadaro that you could fish off too, but parking is a bear. Good Luck.

buy the small gammie herring jigs for 4-5 bucks, live in puget sound, jig for all my own herring, use the smallest weight possible, lighted docks at night are best, just like squidin, Ben
