OK I spend the night before a fishing trip at the table fixing up leaders and my problem is I cant figure out what to put the pre tied leaders in without getting a mess I was using a cigar tube works OK but they still seem to get tangled I would fold them in paper then I take a chance of making a mess on the stream bank if the paper gets away what do you all do. Do they make something for holding a pre tied leader or what? Thanks for the help.

I take a toilette paper tube (minues the toilette paper), and poke the hooks into it, and wrap the leader around it. for the leaders near the edge, u can just cut a little slit on the side, and it will hold the end of the leader... for the leaders in the middle, i poke a hold in the tube, and run it through the middle to a slit on the side... works pretty well for me, im sure someone else has a better system tho.

I use straws (like the kind you drink a soda with) I cut them up in small sections 1"-2" roll up my leader so that it is just a little bit bigger than the straw section and then put the leader into the straw.

Cheap easy and it gets the job done.

Go gets some Pip's boxes at Joes, FMS, Bimart, or just about any fishing tackle retailer. They are handy little round containers. Just poke the hook point into the cork, hang your leader through the slot, put the lid on and twist. It will wind up the leader and store it where it can't get tangled or damaged. When you need to take a pre-tied leader out, just grab by the hook and pull.

They are great. I have quite a few of them. They come in different colors. Use a different color for each size hook.

Ryan, I have used the Pip's leader dispensers for
years. Round plastic container, cork layer to insert the hook point. Now that I think about it are they still available ?, I havent bought on in
ten years. If they are they are the answer to your dilema. Good luck, tight lines.

**** 's Leader boxes...oops, Pip's leader boxes I recommend as brshooter said. Wind the leaders individually.

Or you can use foam pipe insulators, wrap the leaders around the insulator, and hang it off your vest with a lanyard or string.

Luhr Jensen makes a leader pouch that has plastic bag holders for individual leaders. It's about the size of a wallet. I use all 3 of the above mentioned ideas.

The Pip's will run you anywhere between $5 - $8 depending on where you shop. The Luhr Jensen pouch, I think I scored for $3.95 or $4.95. The pipe insulators you can buy at a hardware store or stop by a construction site and see if they have s*****.

i use a leader wallet. gi joes or fisherman's has them. there are six pages inside, and there is a pocket on each side of the page for holding the leaders. a lot more compact than the pip's.

I use small squares of cardboard
(available and CHEAP), use scissors to
cut slits on both ends 1/4" apart and 1/4" long.
About six leaders to 5" square peice.
Stick your hook in the corrugated hole and
wrap line around in slits. Throw in a plastic
bag, you can add your corkies, beads yarn etc ahead of time and see them. When I figure out how to use that digital camera (someday) I'll post a pic.

I use those old tape containers the kind electrical tape used to come in, glue a piece of felt to the bottom roll the hooks up, and stick the hook into the felt take the hook closest to the left out, or which ever way you put them in and its no tangle works great

I use a paint roller (minus the paint) and able to get about 15 to 20 leaders on. Wooduxs came up with the idea of using a small water bottle. the body already has ribs so the line can wrap around and if you drop it in the water you have better odds of retrieving it... though you may have to chase it down river!

Hey ******, it says you have to wrap the line tight around it wouldnt it put bends in your leader,... like when you take them off the roller it would like stay in the "tight" wrap position? i know this sometimes happens when i wrap mine to tight..

Hey Thumper,
I understand the foam pipe insulation idea, but what is up with the slit through with the scissors thing?

Over the last 40 years I've used about everything. The foam pipe insulation slit through with a scissors is the best by far. It holds about 20 pre-tied leaders per foot, and costs nearly nothing.

I agree with the guys about the Pip's holders. Easy to use and will last forever. I label the bottom of mine to whatever size of leader material I am tying up. (8#,10#,12#).

I second the leader wallet, fits in your back pocket! Wrap your leaders individually around your three longest fingers and the wrap each end around the collection of loops twice. When you undo them, put your fingers back in the hoop and spread to tighten then pull on the hook and it will unwind itself. You can get two or three leaders in each pouch.

Try a using a piece of 1" PVC pipe (Whatever length), wrapped with foam pipe insulation. (the kind that comes in 5 foot pieces and slips around the pipe) The insulation allows you to wrap your liters and insert the hooks into the insulation. The PVC prevents the insulation from collapsing and will keep the liters neat & tidy.

I've used the liter jackets, pip boxes, but this $.25 set-up works the best.

I'm with finclipped ,these are a great way to store leaders.I have some 12" long to carry in my vest and have some 30" mounted in my boat.I use them for everything drift rigs, herring rigs, shock leaders, droppers and this way when the rivers are blown out ,you can sit home and pertie rigs way ahead.

I also agree with using a pip's leader box. Just make sure you put one leader at a time and when you pull them do it in reverse order. Last on.. first off so it doesn't stick or has excess pressure when pulling it off.
Another tip I learned from Marty's site can make the pip's turn easier. Pop the inner chamber off and add vaseline etc to the plastic pivot(maybe smooth it first) to help glide the two sections as you turn them winding on leader. I also smooth any rough edges of the slots which align.. so the leader will not be effected by sharp plastic.
I think pip's are great and so compact.
