Gizmo and myself went up and dipped smelt last night. What a $%*(^ @()#_ )_#_#_ pain that was. The river is so high, there is hardly any place to dip from. The water is up into the brush and trees which means you have to try and handle a 20 foot net handle while wedged in between a couple trees. And when you do find a open spot on the bank, your net finds the brush along the bank under the water, not allowing for a net swing.

We tried several spots to no avail. Finally we found a spot we could dip and were getting a few smelt. We ended up with about 20 smelt for probably 2 hours of messing around. Not what anybody would call good or even fair. We talked to some guys who had been there for 2 hours on one spot dipping and they had the bottom of their bucket covered, maybe a 1/3 of the way to a limit.

I sure hope the water drops before they get here any thicker, or their will be a lot of upset people trying to dip while standing waist deep  in blackberries, with an alder sapling under their arm, and no where to swing the net.

The good news is I got to go fishing, and I didnt come home skunked.

You might want to eat em........

The springers are coming and we know how well you can catch those. Maybe you'd have better luck fishing for springers with your smelt net.

Give Roy a break... He is out there daily after work during the season. Thinking, I know I will hook up today. Good thing he built the new ROYBUILT removeable hard top, that way he will stay dry while running his boat.

Speaking of running boats, always check your gas befor you leave the house even if you checked it the night before (a message to all).

Give Roy a break??? Why would I do that? Anybody that has ever fished with him knows, you never give him a break! Too bad most of us will have to crawl on our hand and knees to get under the ROYBUILT Hardtop.

Not being an expert at all on but isn't this a few weeks early for smelt? If so do you suppose that an early abundance of smelt might coax a few springers into the river early as I remember last year guys were saying that springers fd on smelt quite heavily.

I guess that would explain the kneepads RT was wearing in a photo.

You can keep and eat all those smelt Roy!

My grandfather was the "Bubba Gump" of smelt fishermen, and I swear I must have netted and ate a bajillion of those things as a kid.

Smoked smelt, fried smelt, canned smelt, smelt wine, etc.....

Fish em', that is the best use for a smelt. Especially this time of year. Like candy to those nice fat gators.
