View Full Version : Found a dog, NFR(kinda long)

On Monday afternoon I had a very cold, wet, exhausted and obviously lost (or more sadly abandoned) younger black lab mix looking dog collapse on my front porch. She would not move from or leave my porch and seemed to barley have the energy to stand up. I don't own a dog and have not owned a dog since I was a kid but what could I do. I waited a couple of hours and finally with the dog still firmly planted wet and shivering at my front door I went outside to see if she had a caller or something. Sadly I could find anything to identify her owner. I called animal control and they said they could not pick it up for a few days. I then asked them what would happen to her when they did pick it up and they said currently they were only able to give the dogs 3 days in house before they had to be put to sleep. He said this was due to the fact that they are currently very full and out of space. By this time I had had the dog in the house recovering and spent enough time with it to know it was someone's pet and not just a wild outside dog. I at that time could not in good conscious send her out to only have 3 days to meet its' fate. Plus my kids had already named it Lucy and were having a grand time ogling over the nice doggy that had attached its self to our house.
Well it is now Wednesday I still have the dog, much to my wives dismay, and don't know what to do with it. I don't have a dog now not because of lack of want but because my life and odd schedule does not make it fair for me to own an animal like a dog. My yard is only partially fenced so just keeping it outside is out of the question. But this outside thing also leads me to my next point. She appears to be and inside dog! We have had her inside for long periods of time thus far and she is very will mannered and has never pooped or peed in the house. She seems right at home. When you do take her outside she does her thing right away and then wants to play or a bit. After that she goes to the door like "O.K. I am ready to go back inside now." Not only am I not set up at all for a dog an inside dog is really over the top for me right now.
Alas, she is so sweet and well mannered I just can't bring myself to send her to the pound just yet. I have conned my wife begrudgingly to give me a week to ether find her a home or find the owner. Don't get me wrong she is not a trained bird dog but she sits and comes and I have not even heard her bark yet. The one last hope I have is she could be chipped but I can't take her some were to be scanned until Monday. But after Tuesday she has to go.
I realize this is getting rather long so I'll get close it out with this. If you know someone who lost a younger black, lab looking, spayed, female dog in the Vernonia area please post me here or e-mail me at joelg@vernonia.com. Or if you are looking for a family dog who seems to be good in the house, good with young kids (mine are 5 and 2.5 and she has been awesome with them!) and very kind I will gladly arrange a meeting with you. After Tuesday she will have to go to the animal shelter in Columbia County. Please if you own a dog make sure they have their tags on them at all times. It is just breaking my heart to have to deal with this lost dog. I would keep her if I could but a dog just does not work with my families' life.
Thank you,
BlueWater.

Have you put up a few signs in the general area, it's home might be fairly close? Check the greater neighborhood and the local paper for lost dog signs. It sure sounds like it really is someones best friend. :depressed:

Make sure you post to the board again before you do anything.
Does she fetch a tennis ball??

If anyone is considering adoption, I can attest to the behavior of this well mannered dog. This dog was good with my kids and dog as well. It is hard to find a good dog and it would be very sad to see such a good family dog destroyed.
good luck BW.....And quit letting it poop in my yard (jk)

Hi...I am more often known as Cool Texan...just at home right now and couldnt remember my login stuff...apparently I've registered this email address too. Anyway...
So on this dog...can you estimate the weight? Any chance you can post a picture of her? Guess her weight?? Size of paws? She looks like a lab mix?? Mixed with what exactly would you guess? Are we talking Lab and Raccoon? Lab and Sewer Rat?? Lab and Chihuahua?? Lab and Steelhead?!?
I am POSSIBLY interested in adopting her.... but need more information. Let me know. If this doesnt post right, you can email me at work at jwilliams@digimarc.com M-F, 8-5.
Let me know...I assume you are in or near Vernonia, correct? I need to see if the wife changes her mind in the morning on this idea (we already have a Golden, and I want a second dog)....but assuming she still says ok, then I might try to get out there this weekend to take a look at her, meet her, let her meet my Golden, etc.
A pic would be great if you have one.
Thanks!!!

Also....let me know about the whole tennis ball fetching thing. My Golden does, and she'd REALLY like a fetching partner.

Tex-
She is I am guessing about 50 or 60 lbs. I am also guessing she is about 1.5 to 3 years old??? As far as fetch goes she will go after the ball but after it stops she is no longer interested. She will go get the chew toy I got her and bring it back though if that counts for anything. My best guess on breed is mostly black lab and mabey Rotwiler(sp)? or somthing else with brown on the chest and legs. Med length hair. God only knows.
I have yet to get her scaned for a chip. I was planning on taking her in monday to do that. Also, I still have posters out and about. Hopefully someone will call.
As far as this week end goes I am laying a floor at my grandparents house saturday and sunday but mabey I could meet with you Sunday later in the afternoon.
There is an outside chance my family may keep her and my wife and I are using this time as a trial period. But as I feared my and her hours are not letting us spend quality time with the dog like it should have.
I will email you my phone number if you would like to call and talk about her some more. Thank you for your interest. This whole thing just makes me sad. :depressed: Mabey you could give it a happy ending.

I hope someone takes her! Please, let us know if you do!
It's this kind of thing that makes me feel really good about running this site!
If I started an internet site that saved one dog I would really be proud!

Please!?

This morning, even though we didnt really talk about it, my wife did not say no to the idea...so it is possible that we could take her in if your other options dont pan out.
Ideally her owners will see a poster or whatever and get reunited with her. If that happens, be sure to kick the owners in the a$$ for me for not having a secure collar and tags on her. That just makes me SOOOOOO mad!!
I'd be surprised though if your family doesnt decide to keep her since she sounds like a sweetheart. Lack of quality time is an issue...but that is the beauty of dogs...they dont care, and they love you anyway. Just love on them when you can, give them dry, warm beds to sleep on, and play with them from time to time...that is all they really want.
I'll give you a call later today. If I come out there to look at her though I might end up making you show me your fishing gear so that i can figure out what in the heck I am supposed to be buying for steelhead/salmon.

Tried calling you this morning, but no answer.
I emailed you my contact numbers. Give me a call...I do have a couple of questions, such as:
1) How do you know she is spayed?? (unless it was recently done and you can still see the zipper)
2) Compared to her body, how big are her feet? Do they look proportional, or a little too big?? Trying to figure if she still has some growing to do or not.
Thats about it. 50-60 pounds is a good size in terms of a play buddy for my golden.

BW, I too found a dog in your area, actually it found me. I was deer hunting and stopped at a crossroad looking at my map when I heard somehing in the bed of my truck. turned around and a Doberman mix had jumped in.
I'll get to my point. I called Scapoose County animal control and found some interesting information. Your neck of the woods has the highest dog abandonment rate in the state.
Let me give you another tip (or two). You won't find the owner, this I'm sure of. I didn't either. I searched for about a week. We had two dogs and just couldn't keep a third. She was a great dog, I wish we could have.
I droped her off at the animal control, but after 10 days of nothing I called the Portland Humane Society and came up with a better plan.
Give the Humane society a call and check this out. In 2000 I was told by it's director that it had been several years since they had to put a dog to sleep due to space. They did however put them down for sickness.
I asked to have the dog transferred to Portland and before the driver had gotten back to Scapoose, Portland was calling for the records-they had adopted it out in less that 1 hour.
Take it to Portland-on the weekend!
Good luck.

I just finished doing some research on humane societies while looking for a good family pet/ trainable bird dog. It's a little bit of a drive, but if your conscience would bug you too much, it may be worth it. The shelter in Albany is strictly a "no-kill" facility. If you were to drop her off there and her owners did ever contact you, you could either tell them where it is or tell them "Sorry, it ran away" On their web site I only saw 1 that had been there for any length of time. I think if I had to take one in, that's where I would go (If I still lived in that area that is). I'll post the link below. I'd think about taking it, but I pick up my new pup tomorrow   . Someone abandoned 2 beautiful 12 week old German SH pointer/lab puppies down here. Not a purebred, but can't beat the price or the feeling of getting an animal out of the shelter  .

To my friends at ifish-
First of all I have to say that I am truly very moved and touched by the responses and acts of kindness that I have received as a result of my post. It makes me very proud to be a member of this esteemed board. My hat is off to all of you!
Now an update. I currently have signs up and an ad going in the Vernonia paper. In addition several ifishers have given interest in " Lucy " as my girls have dubbed her. Monday I plan to take her in to be scanned for a chip and hopefully Monday night she will have a happy reunion. If the scanning and the signs do not produce her old home my wife and I have decided to be a boarding home for her until an acceptable family has been found to take this extraordinary dog. It still makes me sad to think of the fact someone might have abandoned her. Hopefully that is not the case. No dog pound will have this dog!
Thank you all again for your concern and effort. It makes me very happy to know you are all out there.

Joel, got your message last night, but felt it was too late to call (almost 10). I am not surprised that she did not have a chip.
I'll call you this morning.

Just spoke with Joel, and here is the situation. My wife and I are not sure if we will be adopting Lucy (the dog in question). The reason is that we have a 5 1/2 year old Golden who is pretty set in her ways. Our dog likes to play for a while, then lounge. Lucy likes to play, then play some more (with other dogs that is...in the house, she was great, and very calm)...so we are just not sure if it would annoy the Golden.
Here is my impression of Lucy though. This is perhaps one of the sweetest dogs we've ever seen. When we first met her, it was without our Golden around, and Lucy just wanted to love and kiss on us. When introduced to our Golden, she was wonderful...just wanting to run around and play. She is not the least bit aggressive. She even played amazingly well and gentle with Blue Waters young daughters.
This dog is a WONDERFUL dog for anyone who is considering it. We may still decide to take her in, but cant decide yet on the issue of whether our older Golden would tire of the play schedules or not....who knows.
