Hey...has anyone here ever fished the Columbia for winter steelies??

Do you think July- August tactics would work??

I was pondering that question since the Willamette tribs are blown....Never tried it, but thought about it a few times. I might have to give it a shot.

I've caught a few at the mouth of the Lewis, but that is not really in the Columbia proper.

I have, but I was plunking off the beach. Just a 5-8oz. pyramid depending on flow, and a couple of spin-glos. This is how we used to catch springers too. You don't have to throw too far out.

If I was going to go out right now out of a boat, I'd use a U-20 Flatfish (flo orange) and fish in about 15-20 feet of water behind a wing dam.

Who knows, you may even get lucky and be the first guy with a springer this year.

If I was going to go out in Feb, I'd fish the same water but switch over to a k-13 kwiky. I've seen some monster native steelies caught this way by guys after early springers.

Thanx Aaron...I was using K-10's for the summer fish and sitting in about 20 feet on a nice sand bar. The Clack still looks yucky...now I guess I'll have to look at the tides, and see if they're in my favor. Nope that's out for tomorrow...looks like out going starts about 4p.m. or so for where I'd wanna go.

Might give it a shot on Saturday tho...we'll see. Definitely something I think I wanna do. Might be a good "secret" thing to do. Hmmmmmm.

Hi mark,

Was wondering that same thing and thinking of trying it this week out at my usual summer Steelhead place. They must be going by there!

FishinMission, While i was out at Blue Lake Park buying my annual pass...i drove by/into the James Gleason boat ramp and was thinking the same thing.... It really looks good out there... If the wind ain't a blowin i might be a go'n. My choice is the F 7 black spots....but for winter who knows????? Please post what the outcome is if you go..i have been thinking bout it for a long time but not sure bout debri taking out my anchor line. It could be good out there and we are sitting at home waiting for tribs to drop.

Dorkie...we tried it lower downriver..same story. Thinkin' maybe shoulda went to the mouth of the Sandy, or maybe shoulda been there a month ago. Pretty nice day down where we were, although the ride out in an open sled was BBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRutal.

Or up below the dam, but that would be brutal cold, mixed in with roads and other potential weather. Hurry up Spring.
