If I had 100 bucks tops, and wanted a good spinning reel to use for jigs, what would you choose and why?
If I had 300-400, (Which I don't) and was looking into buying one, which one would you choose and why?
One question for reality, and one for the dreamer in me.

Simple....for $100 bucks.....you need to run the lemonade stand just a little longer and buy a Shimano Curado for $119.00. You might even pull one of these off e-bay for $100 even.
For $300-400 pesos....save some of that money and buy the Shimano Chronarch SuperFree for $229. I have fished with a Calais($330), and their simply is no difference in casting ability, drag, or smoothness.
No, I have not personally fished with every make and model of reel on the market. However, I will bet you a date with Hey Yall that if you try one you will agree.
P.S. I'll even supply the Percoset for the date..... and the Penicillen for afterward

If your going to spend around $100 the Shimano Stradic is very nice.
However, you could get by with a much cheaper reel like the Shimano Spirex or one of the Okumas.

Whoooooops......I didn't know that there was any other kind of reel
Are those the kind that have that cover over them like the hood on a '47 Packard???
Less than $100: Okuma EFS-30
Around $100: Shimano Symetre
If you want a Stella, dig out $500.

I agree with Thumper, the Okuma Epix 30, but get the EFS-30 model; it has a 25% faster retrieve. I have yet to meet a riffle with which I couldn't keep up. FishUSA has the best price: $63.90 including shipping.

$90: Daiwa SS Tournament model 1600 is a great value-for-money, rugged, large arbor reel. I use mine in the salt for casting plugs at tough critters, spooled with 20lb Fireline
$230: Shimano Sustain SA4000FB. Smoothest spinning reel I've used (haven't tried a Stella)

$230 Chronarch super free for the ability to cast very light lures/ jigs with all the advantages of a baitcaster: not a bad suggestion at all!

Jennie, I am a big Shimano fan myself. I will agree with the Shimano Stradic spinning reel which should retail for about $100. I have several of them and they work well. I would advise against any of the Shimano spinning reels that do not have the anti reverse feature. After a lot of use the Shimanos without the anti reverse feature will wear down on the shaft that connects to the reel handle. Just my .02 from experience and a lot of hard use with the Shimanos.
I have heard good things about the Okuma Epix reels too, however, I have yet to use one myself. Good luck with your new purchase.

Zebco Cardinal 4 circa 1976. Can't beat 'em.
Shimano Stradic. For Jig fishing it is great with Fire Line and a 91/2 to 101/2 foot pole. I bought one last year and have caught several Steelhead on it. It performs great. I think I paid around $100 for the reel.

I have boxes of worn out reels, and the one reel you won't find in those boxes is an Okuma. They are hands down the best reel value on the market, in any price range.
