Hunter, my son, and I went up to the Queets today. I hooked one, and lost :depressed: , we ate lots of junkfood, got a bit wet, saw some nice fish caught by some other guys, and found these    !http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/uploads/UP469.jpg

Those are FRESH cougar tracks that were not there on the way in!

Do you really think those are? Or do you know those are cougar tracks?
I always get confused between dog and cougars.
Something about their claws sticking out? Or not sticking out?
Which was it?
That is so cool! (kind of!!!???)

The tracks were larger than the palm of my hand, about 3.25" across. We were in a section of the Olympic Nat'l park that didn't allow dogs, and we didn't see any dogs or paw prints on the trail closer to the parker area. Most (90%) of the tracks didn't have any claws visible, but this one had just the tiniest bit of the individual claw prints (1/8") visible because this print was in some loose river silt/sand. The tracks were more round than oval (doesn't look like it because of the angle), and very few dog breeds actually have pawprints that size.

We also compared the prints to the "cougar warning" poster that I didn't see in the parking lot before we headed down the trail, and they were a match.

In all seriousity...you are in ideal Coug- Country. Last time I camped up in that area, a neighboring camper and I spent quite a bit of time one evening scaring off a full size cat, that insisted on sniffing through both of our sites. For some reason, this mountain lion was very interested in our empty pop cans???? Felt like I was in a Disney Movie. I had always thought these animals were shy. They can be aggressive.

Highwater and I had one cross highway 101 on us down near Gold Beach this summer, also!
