I had a very unusual thing happen today. I had planned to spend the morning bank fishing the Clack. Right after daylight at the Carver boat ramp I stopped to ask a couple of gentlemen in a white Hewes craft if they'd been out lately and what section of the river had been producing the best. Right out of the blue they said they had plenty of room and I was welcome to join them. Unfortunately, I had some late morning commitments and they had planned to fish into the afternoon. If you guys read this board, thank you and if you'll drop me an email, I'll hook you up on a couple of sturgeon holes that me and my prop bound boat know inside and out. I'm also curious about how you did today. It was pretty slow for me from the bank

That was very nice of those guys to offer you a ride. When I used to have my old drift boat, my brother and I used to pick up bank anglers on the Kilches in exchange for a shuttle. I even got some free lures and lessons on how to use them.

i have talked to many of boat anglers but have yet to have anyone offer me a free drift i know if i had a boat and someone wanted to go with me i would be more then happy if had the room. I have been stuck on the bank for two years and have yet to get out and drift a oregon river. When i lived in californa we drived a lot of rivers there. One of thease days i will buy a drift boat. Gotta get some bills payed off first till then im stuck on the bank. :depressed:

I did this on Nehalem bay this year. There was an older gentelman there who had a boat and had been fishing for several days with no luck. I offered to take him with us the next day and we had his limit for him in about 4 hours. Really a nice guy and i would do it again in a heartbeat. I think there would be more offers of a ride but you just dont know who that person is on the dock or bank so be careful. I can tell by reading the posts on this board that the majority if not all are friendly and helpful and in the right situation would make the offer.

My New Year's Wish:

To turn this 'unexpected' behaviour, to EXPECTED!!!

Cool story. I love shocking people with kindness!
Once I was at the Wilson, and there was a guy fishing alone. I invited him to drift down the river with Bill and I.
He had his daughter with him, so he couldn't, but it was so fun anyway! I love the look in people's eyes!

 Really?????

I grew up fishing the Washougal and was a pretty outgoing kid. I met soo many great guys, well at least they were great while on the river. In fact that is how I came accross most of my current friends. Steelheading is a great way to meet some of the nicest people in the world. I know that we all guard our fishing time very closly but we should never do so to the point where we exclude strangers. Some of my greatest times have been shared with complete strangers.
Last Feb I was fly fishing out on the Hoh for winter steelhead. I saw another fly angler so I pulled off the road and went to see how hw had been doing. We got to talking and he invited me up to a couple runs he was going to fish, where he had recently hooked some fish. So I followed him upriver and he showed me a beautiful piece of fly water. When we were finished we were standing around our rigs. He asked me if i'd be around in the morning and when I said yes he replied with " well meet me here at 7:00 Am and we'll go for a float." So we met the next day and went for a float and we even got a fish. When it was over I we went to dinner my treet.
It pays to be friendly when your out on a river yet it costs you nothing. What a bargain.

I've also done the same. Kindness can be contagious. Especially when you are sharing with someone that has a little character. We have been taught to share our whole life and not just of the immediate rewards. Lifelong friendships are started with an act of kindness.

hey folks,
this is why it's important to get your ifish stickers. when you see one, you know you among friends and can trust them. i tried putting one on the back of my rain jacket, but it puckered up after i brought it back into the house. still thinking about taking one of the stickers in and getting some patches made. if i do, i'll let you know the cost and how it turns out.

Great story with a great lesson. One I'd like to do more of in the coming year. Offering rides and taking people fishing is reward enough even without catching a fish. At least it's fun meeting new people.

In the past, we had a Trip Trader page, it was removed due to low activity. The page was intended to get non-boaters with people with boats and exchange trips between boaters. However, most people posted on this main board which turns out great. I'd like to suggest that if people have room and/or people are looking for a chance to fish from a boat, they post this here on the main board. Let's try and get more IFishers fishing together in 2002, wouldn't that be great!?

An act of kindness goes a long way, one I need to apply more often.

Have a great 2002,

Gregg

I don't have a boat but I would love to go out with any one from this board fishing bank or boat. I have only been fishing salmon steelhead for two years so I have a lot to learn and who better to learn from. So next time any of you have an open seat in your boat on a Tue. wed. or Thursday let me know or if you just wanna go hit the water somewhere from the bank i am always game.
