Just got this message from Jennie, but it is a reminder that we all can be affected by tragedy, wherever it may happen, even if we are not immediately aware of the connection.

My good firend, Trey Carskadon, called this morning - at first I thought it was to throw a few barbs my way regarding my lackluster performance in my NFL pool - but then he grows* quite serious and drops his voice*and*barely says, "I'm packing for Ft Hood, Texas - leaving at 3:30."
*
"Wh-wh- - why?"
*
"My sister was shot yesterday. She's been in surgery all morning. We're headed down there today."
*
OMG!
*
His sis is an Army Major.. She's been at Ft Hood waiting for her deployment to Iraq. She came out of Army retirement and gave up a succcessful civilian career to serve - She is an amazing woman. Met her and she's remarkable!
*
Say a prayer for the Carskadon clan!

As most of you have probably heard, Trey's sister was shot in the shooting.

Here, from Grant McOmie, this morning:

News:

Quote:
Trey called me this afternoon with an update on his sister, Dorrie Carskadon:

Dorrie remains in ICU for at least 1 more day.

She was shot three times, not two.
The first bullet grazed her head, the second shattered her pelvis, the third hit her in the stomach.

The reason she was hit so many times is because she was a bit of an easy target. She was administering first-aid to a pregnant woman who was bleeding badly - as Dorrie tightened the tourniquet, a third bullet hit her in the gut and she went down.
The pregnant victim - whom she tried to save - later died.

When Trey asked his sister why she was making herself such an easy target for the shooter, she said she really thought only of helping the others; that's what she was trained to do and she felt it was all a training exercise; didn't think it was the real thing - at first anyway.

She said she thought she was a bit too close to the trainer who was firing with two semi-automatic pistols.

After she was hit, she touched her head and saw blood on her hand and thought she had been hit by "the blank, the wad and powder."

She was that close!

She immediately went to the aid of a fallen victim and after the second shot hit her in the hip, she thought to herself: "I'm going to have to talk with those trainers about those rubber bullets. They really hurt!"

Finally, when she felt the pain of the third shot to her stomach and then saw all of the blood - her blood - in her hands, she realized it was time to lie down - she couldn't stay up anymore and she was angry with the guy doing all the shooting.

She also said that the man was yelling in an "Islamic" language the entire time he was firing his pistols.

President Bush and Laura have been through the hospital, thanking all involved for their service. Pres Obama is expected today.

Lots of generals have been through too -

Trey said that the General of Ft Hood had come in to talk with Dorrie, heard the story and appeared visibly moved by all he saw and all he heard from Dorrie.

Remember, she is 47 - served 25 years in the Army and retired as a Major --- she saw duty in the first Iraq War - where she was awarded the Silver Star - and had a successful civilian career as a Post Traumatic Stress specialist and social worker.

Earlier this year, she decided she must go back to Iraq and help the soldiers who need her the most.

She arrived at Ft Hood last week and expected to be deployed by the end of the month.

She is a hero. Grant
This thread is about Trey's sister. We have had to close many threads about the political aspect of the shooting and we would like to respect Trey here by not going there.

This is just a news update on Trey's sis.

God bless her and God bless our troops. Please keep Trey, his family, his siter and all of the troops in your thoughts and prayers.
