I am taking my son over to the deschutes tomorrow we are planning to camp somewhere around mack's(beavertail or pine tree). I was hoping for a good report. I would like to get him into his first flyrod steelie....anyone with some suggestions or comments.
Thanks

When the sun is off the water, swing with the traditional patterns (green butt skunk, something purple, etc). When the sun is out, nymph fish with glo bugs.

Thanks KillerDave
Pretty confident on what to use and when...I just dont normally spend to much time in the macks area we normally just put in there on our way to the mouth....I could really use a report on how its been there and some good runs with in walking of the three camp sites. I guess we could pull the boat over and row across as well...any suggestions?
thanks

my son hasnt taken the float yet(hes 12) nest year he will do the macks to mouth with me but for this year I figure we will start by an overniter in macks and see how things go before we set out on a three day float...

It's pretty easy to find the runs because there will be plenty of people in them. For the most part they will be pretty cooperative as long as you go in above them and fish behind... Unless it's some arse in a lawn chair or a certain colored driftboat.

I just did the trip to the mouth (BT to HL) and I didn't touch a fish. Saw a few caught with guides and one fly guy had one on below dikes and lost it. Most were catching on gear but it was slower than what it has been. Also getting a little chilly in the AM. Alot of fly fishers out there in all the classic drifts but I didn't see any fish except gear fishers.
