What a fantastic river this really is. I recently made my first trip over there for a really long day on the river, which actually went by way too fast for me. The Kokanee were spawning and were swimming right around our feet as we stood in the river. The fishing wasn't really fast or hot, and the river is cold as hell. But, the scenery, and serenity way more than made up for the lack of fish I caught. I can't wait to get back and try it again. If anyone has any advice about fishing it, I'd love to hear any imput people have.
Thanks, and tight lines for everyone.

It tru;y is an amazing river. I have only fished it a couple times with little success, but do love the area. I would move to bend if the the wife would allow it. I to would love some advice on this river.

Use the search function here on "Metolius" (there's only a single 'o' in the spelling) for some very detailed posts.
The stable nature of the river creates very constant and predictable cycles from year to year. Like clockwork.

If you had led your thread with this sentence and then asked "Where was I?", I would have guessed the Metolius. It is not the place to go for numbers, but for a great all-around fishing experience, it's fantastic. I've increased my success there by fishing the same stretch, the same time of year and getting familiar with the hatches. With the constant water temp, the timing of the hatches there differs somewhat from the rest of the state. The fly shop in Sisters is a good place for Metolius info. That said, I haven't been there in several years, so I'm not up on the latest.

i live in madras so the metolius r. is a hop skip and a jump away from me. i love fishing the river this time of the year. hardly anyone around and nice and quiet. where abouts were u i usually sit around monty campground area since a lot of the road is usually gated off.

I was over on the Met also the other day and saw a lot of Kokanee spawning. I figured that they do not feed once they are in spawning mode but has anyone ever had any luck catching them on nymphs or streamers?

Sometimes the most aggressive one in a school will actually take a shiny, sparsely dressed fly like a "comet" type. This will happen on the first cast or two. After that, you're mostly foul-hooking them.

I parked right there at alingham bridge, and went up and down river from there. There was alot of good looking spots, I just didn't have much luck with the quantity. Beautiful area there though, and even with the limited numbers I am going to hit it again on sunday, and the again in two weeks for the whole weekend.
Is there any better areas that I should try, or is just keeping my line in the water going to be alright?

I lived in Bend when I was younger, and now it's kinda crowded for my taste. I would have nothing against living somewhere near there again though.

have always wanted to get up to this river. i hear it's generally not runnable by boat/raft at all because it gets choked with downed trees all the time. pictures look amazing though!
