All -

I know I'm going to probably spark a huge debate here, but I'm in my first season of fly fishing AND I have next week off. I live in Portland and want to get on a river other than the Clackamas. Preferrably it's relatively close to home.

Where should I go?

The best Oregon River for trout flyfishing is crawling with steelheaders right now. (Deschutes) That said, October/November is a great time to fish for trout there, especially if you can get there on a calm, cloudy day. If you can get away from the steelheaders, you could do really well. It's not the easiest river to fish, however. It's big, fast water. You do have to take the time to learn it. I spent some productive hours hanging around in fly shops my first few years, getting Deschutes advice and buying Deschutes flies. There's some great books out there too.

I second the Deschutes nomination, however, if you want lights-out fly fishing for trout, I recommend heading North and spending some time on the Cowlitz for the hatchery sea-run cutthroats, this time of year especially. I have had more than a few banner days fighting fish after fish on the Cow. 20-30 fish days are not uncommon.

As I understand it, the hatchery program for sea-cutts is now a thing of the past. There will likely be only another season left. Kind of a shame, it's a great fishery.

PM me if you would like more details.
