This river seemingly gets overlooked by fly anglers and I am thinking of headed up there. Have any of you fished it with success and if so were you swinging, nymphing, etc? Some prolific numbers of fish headed in there and would like to take part.

There is a lot of fly anglers on the Cow. I know a lot of spey and trout guys this time of year that partake in the hatchery fest. I seldom see nymphing done on the river with mainly swinging and stripping flies. Good luck!

I'm thinking of giving it a shot too, but no idea where to start. The dry weather is killing me as my usual rivers are mere trickles and the B-run silvers should be showing anytime.

There is lots of good water on the cowlitz. We float from barrier to mission. Lots of nice runs depending on water level. 2,500 to 4,500 cfs is ideal.

very crowded...but lots of fish in the water.

Sat. I picked up 4 SRCs in about an hour and a half swinging Oct. caddis pupa soft hackle. But if can get up there on a weekday, I would think that it would be much less crowded. There is some good fly water though, you just have to dodge the large lead sinkers whizzing past your head.

I would think that the convergence of the Toutle would be productive for swinging. I know that seam is quite a highway for coho.

The Cowlitz is definatly not overlooked by fly anglers but non the less a great place to fish if you have a boat as mentioned. There are steelhead in the system year round and the cut's should be present thru Feb. There are a few bank access areas to fish, Blue Creek Trout Hatchery is your best bet. The flows are great right now and the water is clear so good luck.
