I've just bought 18 ft Idaho Boats with 250 Sport jet. While I've floated the Deschutes often, and own a recreational outboard, I've never run a jet. I'm looking for a guide to teach me the river one day in mid to late Oct. Anybody got any ideas? Steve White

I don't think you're going to find any takers on this one. October is prime time on the big D and guides will be too busy trying to make a living to take time out and show you the river. You may be SOL.

Hire a guide for the day. I wouldn't think it would matter much if he was fishing or not so long as he still got paid his daily rate.
While a good idea, I don't think its possible to learn that river in a day. Especially if you have never run a jet.

No way would anyone learn that river in a day, but you'll still gain some knowledge of it rather than not going at all.

Please be careful on the Lower D. I have ran it since the 70's and it is a very limited group that make it successfully year after year. I would reccomend getting some wheel time since it is your first jet and then work your way up to the Lower D. NFL, Clack, Santiam, Cow and then the D. It is kind of like buying your first pair of running shoes and then running a marathon the next day. Please be careful! I tell everyone that goes with me that those rocks dont move like the sinus rivers of the valley. If you flip them over I swear they are connected to the other side of the world.

Thanks for the suggestions and concerns.I have spent some time driving a jet but I appreciate white water is a different animal ,thats why I'm lookin to book that expertice for at least a day...Maybe that's not enough I'll find out. I'm very familiar with the river, having been on many jet trips and floated it manytimes myself over past 20 years. So if a private boater or guide either way of course I'd make it well worth their time. I do want to start from the mouth. Steve White
