Does anyone know a good spot (closer to Portland the better) to take my 6 and 3 year old fishing. They are pretty good at casting out their bait gear and reeling it in on their own.

I would like a spot where I can wade in and throw around some flies while keeping an eye on them on the bank.

We went to Haapa up on the Lewis outside of Woodland recently, which was OK. But I felt sort of bad after catching (and releasing) a bunch of 3" steelhead babies.

Is Daybreak Park overrun with rowdy inner-tube types or is that a possibility?

Paradise Park?

Thanks.

At that age I took mine to trout farms out in Sandy, down by Aurora, and out at Dundee. Cost a little dough, but you are guaranteed of them hooking into some hungry little fish, and that builds the excitement and enthusiasm. Leave it for later for them to figure out that it's all down hill after the trout farm experience! :D

Oregon Fishing Club is reasonably priced, has several excellent stillwater properties close to the Portland area, and is a great place to take kids.
My wife wishes we'd joined when our kids were small.
Also the Canby Pond is supposed to be re-stocked in the next couple of weeks as the water cools and is open for kids under age 17.

Hit the ODFW site where they have stocking reports and descriptions of different lakes. I have a 4 and 7 and it is nice to not only know where to go but also when. Some of my favorites are Estacada Lake, Henry Hagg and some of the lakes on the North Coast.

Hagg Lake can be really good in the fall, but the bank access is terrible then due to drawdown. They do have a boat rental at boat ramp C, which is in the no wake zone. My daughter and I put in there and do well in October-early November. Fish are coming up to the surface by then, including quite a few holdovers. Late afternoon is usually best.

You can catch some really nice trout there in the fall!

SKIP the trout farms and ponds. You pay by the pound and don't really enjoy the experience other than catching for 15 minutes. Hit a drive in mountain lake this time of year. Longer drive, but the fish can't resist and you can fly fish. Or, low mountain drive in lake like Harriet or Timothy, Trillium. I don't think they charge for anything at this time of year. :twocents:
