I took a friend and his visiting brother in law fishing for Steelhead last evening. One of them had a fall Chinook come up and take the fly. We battled it for about 25 minutes, and then just as it was beginning to tire the knot gave way. Fun and exciting while it lasted! Over the last 40 years, I've had probably had about a dozen Salmon take the fly while fishing for Steelhead. The fly was not deep, in fact was probably only about 6" under the surface when he took it.

Wow, must have been exciting. I've had it go the other way (steelhead hit a fly intended for salmon), but it's not as much fun when your gear outsizes the quary.

I'm in Grants Pass for the night and plan to head out after dinner to try for some steelhead. Short notice, I know, but any general advice? I plan to hit some of the county parks near town with an indicator rig.

Thanks

Sorry I didn't see your question in time to help you. There are fish throughout the middle river, however it's a little early for the best fishing. We picked up one fish last night in addition to the Salmon hooked

Thanks anyway. I poked around Whitehorse Park for a bit tonight. Saw a few fish roll, but didn't hook any adults. You've got a beautiful river down here.

When would be the best tme to float the W&S stretch for steelhead in the fall? I have floated the R several times in late August and caught smolt and a few 1/2 lbrs only ( but lots of fun). Next time I would like to plan it when the fishing is better? Thanks.

Probably right about now. It can be good all through September and October. The permit season ends on October 15th. For many years I have done a trip in the week after permit season, and some years great, some less. By October many of the adult fish are already in the middle river.

I'll be in the Grants Pass / Rogue River area this weekend. In that general location, where are some consistent spots to fish?

There are fish spread throughout the system from Grave Creek to Gold Hill

as long as you're not at Shroeder Park....3 hours and not a nibble. Oh well, I was still out fishing.
