A lot of good places around Spokane. The Spokane River, Amber Lake, Coffeepot a little further away, Rock Lake in October for browns if you want a challenge, run north to the various lakes and rivers up there, etc.....
A good board for Washington is washingtonflyfishing.com (or something like that).

It's bit of a drive but a few years ago when I was in Spokane I drove over to Idaho and hit the St Joe. Fishing was just okay but the country was amazing. That part of the country has unlimited opportunity. Grab a map, close your eyes and point your finger.
Well worth the drive.

I live in Spokane and fish Amber Lake south of Cheney just about every Wednesday evening with a buddy or two. Sometimes we go a little further and fish Sprague or Coffee Pot. If you want a whole day and don't mind the drive, the Clark Fork in Montana (outside of St. Regis) is killer most of the year (but it's about 2 hour drive). I have a cabin on Roosevelt Lake but mostly fish that with terminal tackle out of a boat. PM me if you're interested and I can give you more information or hook you up with us for some fishing.
PS, Newbs -- I love your signature line -- very true!

For swinging flies I'd recommend heading down to the Ronde, the Snake or the Clearwater. You could also stay closer to home and swing soft hackles on the Spokane.
Lots of great water in all of the above.
