I was wondering if any of you have had any luck, this season or in the past, by swinging flies for coho. I talked to a guy walking off the river the other day who claimed he and his buddy the day before had both limited out on swung flies. He showed me the fly, I went home and copied it, and fully intend to try it this weekend. I was just consulting the collective wisdom of the group to see if any of you have a favorite or secret fly that coho will actually chase. By the way, this is my first post, so Please inform me of any protocol i need to adhere to if I am not

Tradition has it that your first post should be some background or interesting story.

If you find them in the right water (and they're in the "mood") coho will readily take swung flies.

Well there was this one time I was fishing with my dad and lost my rod in the lake twice in one day to trout who stole my rod right off the beach of the lake we were fishing. Both times I cast out the backup rod we always carried and snagged my line, bringing in both my new rod, and the fish that was still on it. (this story was a lot longer before I tried submitting it and realized I wasn't logged on)

Sorry, it was a lot better the first time

The go to swung fly for Coho is the Pink Pollywog....

Skate them down and across, strip towards the end, and hang on...they love pink, and they just savage big headed flies making a commotion on the surface..

Awesome. Well I've tied up some wogs and I'm hoping to use them. Are there any signs coho give telling you they are aggressive and ready to take surface flies?

My experience with coho is that they hold in different water than steelies, water that is not very conducive to swinging. I have always found them in slower water or eddies where casting and stripping works better. I don't think the fly is as important as you might think. If you get a player and you strip something in front of it, then it's game on.

I prefer to target Silvers is in estuary water on the coastal rivers, as they if they are present, they will be slashing the surface and at times leaping a foot or two above the surface...once they get upstream, they may continue this behavior unless they feel threaened...as it is, they are usually in the upper water column..
