Being new to float tubing I'm wondering if you guys wear personal flotation devices when tubing in small lakes and such? If so, what ones should I be looking at?

Honestly I don't. I've heard it recommended, however with the older round float tubes (which don't sit you above the water, or even close) it would be extremely cumbersome. But with the tractor innertube (1/4" rubber) that mine has, punctures aren't likely.

Actually wearing a PFD in most float tube situations would definitely be quite cumbersome. That being said, I'd hate to be sitting in a float tube that was losing its wind and not have one. I just lash one to the back of the back rest, nothing fancy, just something that would float me if necessary. Not sure if that's the best approach or not, but it's what I do.:D

I would not be in a float tube without a PFD. There are lots of options for comfort.

I wear a PDF everytime I'm on the water in any type of craft.

I use a Super Fat Cat tube. I wear a SOSpenders PFD. You really don't even notice it is on. If you are using a round tube, consider a shorty model PDF.

-I use an inflatable pfd.

-on older tube type I actually replaced the headrest inflation tube with a foam pfd.
--the problem is if the tube deflates and you have neoprene waders on the waders combined with the headrest tend to push your head into the water. I don't like to let go of my fishing rod so it could be a struggle.
--also never fish alone so usually someone close at hand to help out.
