Well my first attempt at tying flies in 35yrs was a real mess. The problem i had was my bobbins kept cutting my 210 denier thread and fraying my floss really bad. they were Cabelas 4.00 bobbins so i guys i got what i paid for. What would you recommend? Ceramic?? Thanks for the help!

if you havn't already, try bending out the arms that hold the thread spool, you may just have a tension problem and its breaking the thread that way. if you still have problems then i would suggest a ceramic bobbin.

yes - ceramic!

i like the ones with the all ceramic tube.... it looks like a little porcelain straw...

don't go cheap on the bobbins. spend at least ten bucks... maybe even 13.95 :D

I just ordered a few new ceramic bobbins. I think that will cure the problem. Thanks for your help!

Ceramic should do the trick. Years ago I had that same problem, but I just had burr on one of them. Hint, don't use them to string wire!:twocents::twocents:

When I first started tying I broke more thread than I can count. Lot's of frustration. The ceramic certainly will make a big difference. I also took a very fine, pointed dremel tool and used it to smooth the inside of thread end of the bobbin. That helped a lot as well.

I also found that if I kept the bobbin closer to my fly when I was tying, I would feed the thread more consistently and not wear through it. As a last resort you can keep a small paper bag next to you tying bench. Use it to cover your mouth when you swear.

I still break thread sometimes but the more you tie the less you break. I only use the bag once in a while.:)

NewBS has good advice. I have been tying for about 30 years. It varies bobbin to bobbin and thread to thread. As noted above it helps to keep the bobbin fairly close to the fly, if you don't let the thread work on one length of thread it will reduce breakage.....

BTW I have had good luck with cheap bobbins, but not on the finest thread.
