So I have a 1979 Johnson 6 hp. The thing has always ran pretty good until...... one day the thing would run its self out of gas. Let me explain.... If I pump the bulb so the carb is full it will run for a couple minutes then die. Now if I keep pumping the bulb every so often the motor will stay running til I quit manually pumping. One other thing... if I take the fuel line off and start the motor (as to burn the gas out ) it spurts gas out the the connection fitting. ( I don't remember it ever doing this before. Now to try to fix the problem I have put a new fuel pump on and took the carb off and sprayed carb cleaner in all the orfices. Still not fixed.... Anybody have any other idea's?

I would have said a weak fuel pump, but if you have a new one in place and it does the same thing, then maybe its not. There should be a one way valve in the fuel pump that won't allow pressure to flow out through the fuel line though. The other thing is if you have a small air leak in the connectors or at a fitting, it won't draw fuel from the tank very well.

I actually have an Evinrude 6 that does the exact same thing right now, I have a new fuel pump and some other parts to put on it, but I don't need it right now so its just sitting.

So I found a web site the gives a break down of how to rebuild a fuel pump.( I failed to mention that I'm a pretty curious fella and I took my new one apart before I installed it.) I think I had something messed up but I bout 99% sure its back together right now. The problem with the motor started before I changed out the fuel pump, so not sure if I fixed the overall problem with the motor. Will see tomorrow! If she wont troll I'll hang on the hook and take a nap. I'll check in tomorrow will the results. Thanks

I think you have an air leak in the gas line.
If the bulb is up and goes down (with out staying firm) its a
small hole in the line, preventing a solid draw from the tank.
Try spraying WD40 on the bulb ends and such, see if that
will help it, not to starve.:)

O.k. so I need to learn to leave things alone. Fixing the brand new fuel pump that I took apart and put back together wrong fixed my problem. She's PERRRRing like a kitten again!!!
