View Full Version : Help troubleshooting New Suzuki 9.9 trim issue?

While helping a friend break in a new Suzuki 9.9 high thrust yesterday we encountered a strange issue. Out of water the trim/tilt unit worked great(full range/no sound). While motoring in the water it would not trim out above 1/2 throttle. We would slow it down and then try and it worked that way no problem. We then trimmed out and sped up to above half throttle and trimmed it in and there is a terrible screeching whine. It is mounted on a Thunder Jet offshore bracket kicker plate so I thought that maybe the terrible sound might be harmonic resonance, but that was just too pronounced. There was still the issue of the lack of ability to trim out above 1/2 throttle. It was shipped here New in box, we added Engine oil and checked the lower unit oil and it did have lower unit oil in it. Is there a chance that it ships without trim unit oil? Are we maybe overlooking something simple? Any assistance prior to taking the whole boat in to the shop would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Tony PDX

My yamaha T8 does not trim up while going over 4 mph ...
I do not think the pump is strong enough to counteract the thrust ...
I don't know about the whine , could be a harmonic vibration I guess ...
when you trimmed it back out did it disappear ?

Thank you very much for your response. The sound(screech/whine) is not present at all when when it is trimmed either way at slower speeds. It is only there when trimming in above 1/2 throttle. It is interesting to know that yours has some sort of similarity as to not working at higher speeds. Do you feel the pump is too weak or could it be a limiter of some sort? It is intriguing either way. Thanks again, Tony. Anyone else with a 9.9 Suzi have the same issue? I would love to hear!

Trim and tilt are two different things, so just because this motor has the tilt feature doesn't mean its designed to be use for trim adjustments also.

Tilt rams have less power and move fast(er), trim rams move slow and on larger motors there are normally two of them to create enough force to adjust the angle at speed.

There is also a bypass valve on the tilt ram to relieve pressure when you try to use it for trim. The same thing will happen on a large motor when you go past the point of where the trim rams will travel, the tilt ram doesn't have enough power so the bypass bleeds off the pressure and even if you start with it trimmed up higher than the trim rams, it will bleed down and rest on them.

The sound you hear is most likely the bypass valve bleeding off pressure.

I have the same set up and mine also does the same.
Its just too much pressure for the trim to overcome.

Thank you guys very much for your input!! I will let my friend know its all good! That sure beats the heck out of trying to get info from a dealer who just wants you to "Bring it in and we'll get around to it". You guys are great!! Sincerely Tony PDX
