My dad has a early 90's 30hp evinrude that dies after idling for a few minutes. We have replaced the fuel, tank, filter, hose, plugs, etc... and still no luck. It runs fine at speeds above an idle but when we try to idle (troll) it will run for 5-10 minutes then die. It does not sputter or cough first it just dies. It starts right back up and runs great for another 5-10 minutes then quits again.
Based on some brief research it looks like we may need a carb rebuild. This is above our abilities, so I was wondering if there was anyone who knows how to do this and wants to make some extra $$$.
Or can someone recommend a local evinrude dealer close to the Wilsonville area (south metro to north salem, canby, tigard, ore city, etc...)
Thanks, Dave

Mark Hanafan (sorry I forget the name of his repair business) 503-653-7770 really knows his OMC stuff. I would try him.

Also, this sounds like a small air leak. Like in the bulb or area.
Did you try sparying WD-40 around the fittings while this is
happening? It doesn't take a very big hole to make this happen.

Thanks for the tips. We put on all new hoses, fittings and tank but might have missed something. I will try the WD 40 test. Also I called Mark seems very nice and estimated prices seemed pretty good to.
Thanks, Dave

Sportsman Marine in Salem. They are Evinrude experts and great guys to do business with!

Trolling with a 30hp 2-stroke? Those motors aren't made to troll, they're made to run. Extended periods (5-10min.?) and it will start to load up with excess fuel and oil. Assuming a 30 hp is a two cylender with two carbs, you could try turning the idle air screws in a 1/4 turn(leaner), or out a 1/4 turn(richer)? That's what a shop would most likely do if you weren't asking them to rebuild the carbs.

A bunch of idling from a little high strung 2-stroke is a lot to ask.

Smj I agree, you would have better luck trolling with smaller motor or with a trolling plate.

Those motors can troll all day without an issue if running correctly.

Try squeezing the bulb in the fuel line when it starts to die, or just do it before you think its going to die and see if it stays running. If it keeps running, its most likely a fuel pump problem or a tiny air leak.
