I recenly saw Jennie's thread on a prayer journal and answered prayers. I just have to share our follow-up story. It has been one year now since my family turned to our freinds, community, schools, workplaces, church, and ifish for a much needed prayer. See the following link:
Prayers needed for 11 yo ifisher(UPDATED 8/23) (http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=211748&highlight=11+year+old+surgery) (http://www.ifish.net/board/images/ifish/misc/multipage.gif 1 (http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=211748&highlight=11+year+old+surgery) 2 (http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=211748&page=2&highlight=11+year+old+surgery))
It's been one since this whole journey began. Our then 11 year old son -David- was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It was baseball size and in the worst possible place - on the brainstem. Surgery was our only option. At that time we immediately contacted everyone we knew to begin praying. We were told prior to the surgery that 30% of people do not survive the surgery. The neurosurgeon also felt the tumor was malignant based on the pre-surgery MRI.
The marathon surgery lasted fourteen hours on 8/21/08. Ten hours into surgery we were told there was a complication. David had suffered a large hemmorhage on the right side of his brain. My wife and I prayed for the next four hours. We hoped for the best but also realized the alternative.
By this time our prayer chain had reached across the country with the help of friends and family. The neurosurgeon finally came into our room and sat down. His look was of great concern and exhaustion. He said our son had a strong will to live and easily could have left us at any moment.....but didn't. He also said there seemed to be an external force that pulled him through! He was suprised by the lab reports showed the tumor was not malignant. The hemmorrhage was on the surface of the brain only and was repaired, so no brain damage.
Now the recovery begins. David spent 28 days in ICU and 77 days in the hospital. He had to re-learn everything from walking, talking, eating and combing his hair. It has been a year of therapy.
David finished the sixth grade last spring with a 4.0 GPA and was named student of the quarter. He is back to shooting hoops, bicycling, and fighting with his brothers. In one week he will be going on his first archery hunting/camping trip with dad. I'm hoping we'll get a B10 trip in Labor Day weekend.
Next Wednesday he has another MRI at OHSU. Purely precautionary. Please send another prayer our way!
Yes folks, prayers are answered! David is our living testimony and hero!
