I will be there as well. I cant leave town Fri night though so I will be there Saturday late morning and wont be in the derby but I will be out there having fun none the less. I will be in a ski supreme. Ya, I know, not exactly a fishing / trolling boat but I will try it at least.
Even if the fishing doesn't pan out, I will get to be on the water with my parents which has not happened in many many years.

Good Luck everyone. We had planned on being there but I am stuck in Pittsburgh on business until Sunday. Hot, Rainy, Muggy as hell. Really makes me appreciate Oregon all the more.

Have fun at Odell, Kokonee Power and Shelter Cove have a wonderful derby planned for you.

Just a couple points of interest for me. First, I see on the application for a side pot for "large brown". I have read a couple posts that say there are no browns in Odell? I have no direct knowledge as I have never fished Odell which comes to my next point. I am thinking about trying to talk the boss...uh....wife into making the trip but as of yet I am not set-up properly. I found a way to clamp one rigger onto the boat rail so I could drop a presentation down 70-80' on one side of the boat. Last weekend when I was sitting over a huge mass of kokanee there was nothing on my finder. I plan on replacing it but that is another discussion with the bo....wife. So I guess what I am saying is does anyone want to offer a suggestion of where to fish and how deep if I do get the ....wife on board with going?

Anybody want to throw me a suggestion, pm, about where to go and how deep to try to put a few in the boat?:D please. I will have 4 in the High Impedence on Saturday, myself the wife and the two little ones. Anybody have a VHF that will be on? I have one that I have not used as of yet.

If I read the rules correctly everyone in the boat has to be registered for the event or you will be DQ'd. Just wanted to let you know just so that you don't get a surprise at the weigh in even if everyone wasn't in the derby. Good luck, we'll probably see you out there.

You are absolutely right, no browns in O'Dell. The side pot listed on the entry was supposed to have been deleted, leaving only the blind bogey side pot. Not sure what happened there, but ..............
As far as launching, etc. I can't help you much as I have only visited there once and didn't fish. Maybe one of the other ifishers can enlighten you. Look forward to meeting you.

I am launching at trapper creek which is just before shelter cove. As far as where to fish, I am not the one to ask. I have never wet a line in this lake. We are heading up on Friday early to get a feel for the lake and hopefully locate some fish. I am sure some of the other folks here can give a little hint as to likely areas.

The best of luck to all of you , who have entered the derby. Please leave a
few Kokanee so the Lakers will not go hungry this winter

I still need a picture of that 40 lb I have not caught yet

Thanks for the heads-up, I read the same, might have to ask the powers that be if there is a family discount otherwise it will be $160 to Kokanee Power so a good deal eitherway. See you-all on the water.

Maybe the problem wont be us overfishing the Koke's, it may very well be the Bull Trout/Dolly Varden eating all of the fish to the point the lake plays out. Half of the fish we brought in had teeth marks on them from the above mentioned fish and were undersized. I talked to one of the people that worked at the resort off the record and they told me that this spring the fish were stressed and paper thin.

last May I had two friends up from Sacramento and Mark Bolton another friend. Mark owns the Odell sporting goods. Off my planer boards we hooked up two Bulls, and as soon as we saw them, back they went. They where both
Vary nice fish. Mark says he thinks one was well over 18lbs and the other about 12 or 14lbs.
I have always wondered, how many went home with people that thought they where Mackinaw/ Lakers.
I have read of people on Shasta saying they had nice Kokanee, but where
actually Kings. Shasta has not had Kokanee since the early 70s
Those teeth marks you referred to could come from Rain Bow, pretty sure if a Mac or Bull bit at them there would be a nice size piece missing

I am not sure about Mackinaw, but I am sure judging from the size that they are as well but have never fished for them. I just remember the strike from a Dolly in relation to other fish I have caught over the years and the aggression up to landing the fish makes sense.

With what I thought I was seeing on my finder (which does not seem to do a very good job) There should be plenty for the Macks and Bulls to eat, of our 14 fish only one had bad marks on it and that appeared to be a prop mark not a bite wound. As I understand the Kokanee life cycle, the smaller size of the Odell Kokes is suggestive that there are too many for them to grow to the size we like to see. I doubt that many fish that get bit by a Bull trout get away, even the three pound "dinks" that we were catching this spring folded my steelhead rod like a lawnchair on the strike and short strikes on herring mangled the herring beyond repair. Bulls are certainly very aggressive. The biologists have determined that Dolly Varden and Bull Trout are very distinct species and our central oregon lakes hold only Bull trout from what I understand. All in all we had a Great weekend at Odell, it was the first time I have done anything except drive by on hwy 58 and wonder how it would be to fish that lake. Kudos to Kokanee Power, Shelter Cove Resort, and Daly's window cleaning for putting on a great event and thanks to all the other sponsors for some great prizes.
