Hey everyone thanks for looking at this
I have a V6(Chevy) OMC engine, in my boat.
I have a issue that when I go for the first start at the dock the engine,
seems like it's not getting any gas. It just turns and turns over and over.
Once I give a bit of starter fluid. It will start right up, I get it nice and
warmed up then. I have zero issues the rest of the day. I am hoping
it's something simple I can fix myself.

Thanks
Clayton

Is it fuel injected or have a carb?

It's a carb.

Thanks :)

Your carburetor likely has an accelerator pump. All this means is moving the throttle forward fairly quickly will squirt fuel into the cylinders, without air actually moving through the carb and sucking it out (that's how they work when the engine is running).

Before you attempt to start the cold engine, move the throttle from idle to full throttle and back 3-5 times. After that, the engine should fire up more or less instantly.

Check the choke out. Sounds like it is not working.

:agree::yeahthat:
Starting fluid has been the kiss of death for more than one engine ...
It takes the film of oil off the cylinder walls and extended use will
promote scoring of the cylinder walls and possibly crack a ring ...:twocents:

Maybe a bad check valve on the gas line?

In any case, based on the information presented so far everyone is in agreement that it is a fuel problem.

Keep us posted............

Thanks everyone for all your advice. I tried this last night and the engine started perfectly in my driveway. I will continue to work through all your great advice.
Thanks

My v6 powered mercruiser has a oil pressure switch that will only allow the fuel pump to run when oil pressure is up. It's a safety switch to prevent the electric fuel pump from pumping gas when the engine is not running. I have to crank for a long time before oil pressure increases enough to allow the fuel pump to run and fire up the engine. Do you have a similar setup?
