Been reading about Electrolysis but not sure what it is....

Here is my situation. I re-wired my boat the way it came but the negative wire in connected to the aluminum hull for an entire boat ground. Then the nav lights were grounded to this and other things. I want to know if I should remove all ground to the boat.

Thanks

Electrolysis briefly is the electrical action of two dissimilar metals. Moreover, what happens is the metals start eating away at each other. A common cause of this in boats (especially in metal boats) is grounding through the hull. A common theory about grounds is that positive runs to negative, but in fact, that is not the case. Electrons flow from negative TO positive. Thus, when running a ground to a metal hull what happens is the static electricity from moving through the water and electrical components act on that, eating away at your hull. I would first make sure nothing is grounded to your hull, as well as installing more zincs. Zincs counteract this problem.
