I'll be making my first trip to Diamond lake in 2 weeks and was wondering what the best route would be from Portland. I Will be loaded down and towing a boat. I-5? Hwy 26? Any input will be appreciated. Also if you would like to share any secrets on how to catch the big ones! thanx.

I would take 5 to Eugene ; take the Oakridge exit; to hwy 97; head south.

Another option is to go to Roseburg and then up the hill along umpqua river to Diamond Lake..kinda long climb however. heavy load might mean go thru oakridge...coming home come down thehill to roseburg..a long downhill and beautiful route.

I like to troll; however, still fishing in the cheese hole has been effective. Just ask the marina folks; very helpful. personally, I would troll an f-5 or f-7 frog finish flatfish outside the cheese hole to Thielson campground and along the shrimp beds over there..stay out of the weeds meaning stay in 20-28 ft of water. couple of ounces of weight and the troll will work.

Good luck.

Hwy 58 Oakridge. If you go Roseburg make sure the Hwy is open now.

Another vote for Hwy 58 to 97... Took the family that way a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. That's the only way we'll go.... It's nice to get off I-5 quicker and 58 moves along pretty quickly. :twocents:

I was there this last weekend... drove down from Corvallis. We went down i5 to Roseburg and then cut over on 138. It was an easy drive, took about 4 hours from Corvallis. 138 had been closed up until a couple weeks ago due to a fire, but it was open as of yesterday. Very scenic drive, and yes a slow gradual climb up to Diamond.

Go I-5 to roseburg take 138 to the lake , its an easy drive not as steep as 58 , takes an hour longer to go via oakridge . probably one of the most beautiful rivers in the NW

We just got back from Diamond Lake. We live in Tigard and did the I5/58/97 route and it was good. The inlaws took 138 back to Roseburg today and there was a TON of truck traffic so it was real slow going for them.

So Hawk, how was the fishing?

Spotty. The guide boat seemed to be doing well at the cheese hole, but most of the folks around them weren't nearly as busy. There were a few nice sized fish coming in at the end of the day for those that spent most of the day on the water, but we were only out for a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the late afternoon/evening.

Just got back today from a 4 day weekend there. First time there and it is a beautiful place. C&R'd alot of little ones, did manage to get a few decent fish including my friend Mike's 4 pounder pictured here. Hope to get back for the Kokanee Power derby at the end of September.
