my fatherinlaw just gave me his outboard.used 1 year since complete rebuild.he cant remember what year it is.black with red lettering.any ideas? 65 hp mercury

If it's tall, narrow, and kind of an oval-shaped powerhead it would be probably very late 60's through very early 80's Merc Thunderbolt. They were probably the most popular engines on the water in their time, still see lots of them on the water, and lots for sale.
If you don't want it, I'd be happy to take it off your hands, as I need a new main engine :D

Should do good on a 16 footer. I have an Evinrude 75 on my boat - and when I could get the thing to start, It would push the boat along nicely, get 'er on plane quick, and top speed w/o the top would be between 40 and 50 on a calm lake. My boat is glass over plywood - if your boat is just glass it should be a lot lighter, and thus easily jump on plane with 65hp unless you're close to max weight rating for the boat.
