Showed up at Odell Sat morning and started trolling off Princess Creek for kokanee. Tried several combinations and varied my depth before getting my first fish on a red wedding ring 26" behind a flashlite flasher at 35 feet. Tipped with a shoepeg corn on upper hook and berkely maggot on lower hook. Picked up five more fish in the next ten minutes and was beginning to feel I was finally dialed in.
Then...the crank handle on my mini-troller downrigger broke! I couldn't believe it. Tried working it without the handle, but no deal. I then tried rigging up a "poor man's" downrigger by attaching the lower 10' of cable to a rope, but the rope had too much water resistance and may have been spooking fish. Tried some heavy banana sinkers and after losing five fish, decided that wasn't going to produce. Tried jigging and had a couple of half-hearted bumps, but nothing hooked.
Bottom line: went home with six kokanee hooked in 15 minutes before Murphy showed up and my downrigger broke. I guess it's time to get a new (different) downrigger.
I did enjoy watching a bald eagle and several osprey fish. They did pretty well yesterday morning.
