Questions regarding Theilson View Campground at Diamond Lake. Anyone have any experience camping at this location? I have heard that you can beach a boat along the shore. I have a new 20 foot seahawk with 150 HP Yamaha and do not want to damage the motor. Is it safe to beach the boat at this location.

Thanks.

Oh, yes you can! At least you used to be able to! It's kind of a pain but nice, all at the same time.

You have to really watch your gas tanks as they have theft problems there.

Call the D. Lake lodge and ask about it? They'd know.

Wait a minute. I'm talking about the campground that you can see Mt. Bailey from. In order to see Thielson, you'd have to be on the other side.

I'll have to look at a map. All I know that's on that side is summer homes.

They have problems at the lodge too... or just in the open on the shore at the campgrounds.

Diamond Lake... I wish I had gone there this year instead of Disneyland.

Thielson View is on the west side of the lake. Diamond Lake campground and the lodge are located on the east side of the lake.

I have no first hand knowledge of weather or not you can beach a boat along the west shore line. But I have done it along the east shore line and I remember seeing boats beached along the west last year when I was there.

I didn't have any problems with anyone stealing stuff from the boats. But I didn't leave it beached for very long either. If you beach your boat along the east shore be careful of the wind waves that come up in the afternoon if your boat is small. 10 years ago my brother in law swamped his boat for this very reason, twice in the same week. :meme:

It pays to learn. Then he got angry when we wouldn't help him bail out the boat the second time.

Have a great time and remember to take lots of bug spray.

Kendall here; an ifish "fry" that learned to fish on Diamond as a little guy over 30 years ago. Great Forum! Got lots of advice for my day trip, yesterday. Going to PIF with a report on Diamond in a bit. Thanks for having me!

I haven't stayed at Thielsen View since I was a kid, but we used to beach our canoe there all the time and other boats were certainly beached.

The underwater terrain there is generally more sandy and shallow with a gentle slope. I anchored my boat off at the best place I could find at Diamond Lake CG last year and it sure made me miss Thielsen View! Rocks galore!

AND the prevailing winds tend to take the waves FROM the Thielsen View side on over to the East/DLCG side. So Thielsen is much more peaceful at night.

No sunsets on the West side, but it's nice to see the sunrise instead... that is... if you're not already out on the lake.

Again, I was there yesterday and did see some boats beached at Thielsen View.

So does that mean there is more wind on the East side, and camping would be better on the West side? Thanks

In general, yes. That is correct.

The East side might stay warmer longer as you will be in the sun longer, but the wind more than makes up for it, IMO. And at the coldest part of the day, sunrise, the sun will, of course hit the west side first and warm up the fam sooner while you're out on the lake.

My father and I have been fans of Thielsen View. since the early 70s.

Now if you don't have a boat... and can park close enough to the north... you can walk over to the marina in the morning. That would be the only reason I could think of for camping at DLC. But other people prefer it to Thielsen. Not sure why. As I recall, Thielsen might be a little more primitive. Perhaps that's the reason. I sure do like the "view" of Thielsen from Theilsen View. The evening sun really lights it up!

Just returned from Diamond Lake. On Wedneday my 8 and 13 year old sons caught 3 nice fish in two hours. One fish was 20" and at least 4 pounds. Strong winds from south made it hard to keep boat from moving. On Thursday we fished for 5 hours and caught 12 fish. All were 16-19" long. Probably would have limited out but same wind came up from the south. On Friday we fished for 2 hours and caught 1 fish each. Then we had to go home . Lake is very shallow near Theilson View. I trimmed motor up and had no problems. I never beached my new boat because I did not feel comforable with any of the sites that other smaller or older boats have used. Thielson View Camp ground is nice but premitive...with pit toilets and no showers. The campground I chose had a large pull out that I was able to pull my truck and boat into. I chose to keep my baot at the campsite. The next time I go to "DL" I will also consider camping at Broken Arrow.

You might think about buying a spring line...rubberized, stretches...anchor from the bow and put the pull-line to shore on the stern with lots of slack. A boat that big should ride the waves pretty well, nose into the wind...
We actually did that at the lodge this spring and it went very well.

Wow! Sounds like you guys had a great time!

Yeah... My Blue Water is for sale. I've moved on to the old Starcraft aluminum. I've anchored my boats out enough in my life. I do enjoy the lack of worry nowadays. But I sure wouldn't complain if I had your rig!

Broken Arrow is generally considered the least favorable of the 3, non RV campgrounds, though I've never stayed there so I can't attest as to why. It would be nice to hear your opinion of it if you do stay there next time.

So how did you fish for that haul of yours?

Use a sliding sinker, approximatly 30" of leader, and a size 18 good quality treble hook. I used rainbow power bait and smell jelly. Cast out and let bait sink to bottom. Reel in slack and wait for fish to bite. Pole holders work great for kids. Most of the time fish set hook. I have been fishing this way for over 20 years. Both of my kids have been fishing since thery were in diapers. They have caught many fish in their 8 and 13 years of life in a boat.

Kendall: Broken Arrow Campground is a nice place to camp. It's quiet, clean, & has great showers. The only reason it might not be as popular is that it isn't on the water.

That's good enough reason for me!

Everyone has their priorities. It's great that Diamond gives us choices!
