Has any one ever fished Round lake? Just North a few miles from Suttle Lake on the east side of Santiam pass.

It's a good lake to hit early and later in the year. around july the skeeters can be terrible. I believe they plant it with rainbow or cutts but it does have some brookies in it also. Trolling or drifting has always done me best. The lake is a good lake to swim in also.

TY, I will be heading home on leave in Sep. I am trying to think of a place that I can take the wife and kids, take my drift boat, plus do some bow hunting.
Is there a boat ramp, or slide that I could launch a drift boat there?

It's about 20-25 acres in size and in an area that must have been burned over a few years back. Largely surrounded by the skeletons of trees
The fish are cutts...coastal cutts, which rather surprised me biggest I got was about 10" long, caught about seven altogether, and kept 4. ( Caught on worms and trolled woolly buggers ) No problems with mosquitoes.
There's a church camp on the west side, so I had plenty of company for most of the day. I launched on the east side, but if you have anything other than a canoe, a kayak, or an inflatable, you'll have to do some serious wading to get your boat in and out. Dunno about any other places to launch.

There is a dirt launch. I havent been there in a year so i dont know what it is like now. I was the first to launch my db last year, we had to move all the flooting logs that piled up there over the winter. There is some big brookies to be caught. Good luck HA

That area was burnt over during the B&B fire a few years back. One other thing is that the road in can be a washboard going in so drive careful so you don't lose control of things. Used to have deer come through the campground years ago but since the fire don't know if they do or not.
Have fun and enjoy your stay back home.
does any one know about square lake? it looks like it is a short hike in lake with the trail head at round lake?. I am looking for short hike in with fishing to take my younger daughter (5 year old) on her first back packing trip???

Square lake is about a 2 mile hike in from the Round lake side. You have one hill that is fairly steep when you start the hike then it is pretty level until you reach long lake then you have one more hill that is not to bad of a walk. You can reach Square lake from the PCT Trailhead on hwy 20 it to is about 2 miles in but only one steep hill and that is coming right out of square lake and it is approx. 50 yard in length.
I grew up backpacking into square and long in the 60's and did a lot of camping at round lake also. It's best to fish square with a rubber boat because i always did better trolling that anything else.

When will u be over in that area??? I might see you if your going the first part of September. and there's not really any where u could get a boat in unless u use a kayak, canoe etc...and the roads going up to the lake ARE washboard unless they fixed them with in the last year.

I am not sure of when. I am stationed in Iraq. I will be geting leave at some point in Sept, that is all I know for now.
If I make it home before Sept 12th when the high cascades rifle deer season open, I have a spot on the west side of the pass that I want to hit, but not after all rifle hunters are out in force. Will just have to wait and see.
I would like to find somewhere that I casn take my drift boat, so I can spend some time with wife and kids during the day doing something fun, instead of me being gone hunting all day.

If you go to round lake get a trail map up to square lake. About half way to square lake (1mile) there is a deer trail off to the south. Follow that trail about 1/4 mile off trail to long lake. I caught my largest brookie there. 17" and thick. square lake has brookies too

Been fishing round lake for over twenty years. Not nearly as pretty a setting as it used to be before all the beetle kill and then B & B in 2003, but still a nice place to wet a line and cool off on a hot summer day. Three Fingered Jack is your constant companion while you fish.
I haven't caught a cut in there in a while, only brookies. Years ago, the fish would get some good size.......gets more pressure now.
All methods seem to work. My favorite is to fly fish the downed trees in the water on the north and northwest parts of the lake. I have had tremondous success fishing Balls-o-Fire on a number ten hook 2-3 feet below a clear casting float. I'm told the deepest water in the lake is found just off of the inlet creek on the southwest side of the lake.
It's a perfect lake for a small rubber boat or a canoe, and if you're feeling really adventurous, there is usually at least one crude log raft on the lake.
Mosquitos are hellish on the west side over by the Christian camp, but not so bad by the campground. Not sure why.
There used to be a great big river otter in round lake, but I haven't seen him in a long time.
The access road is a loop off of Jack lake road. Take the south end for the better views along the way.
Good Luck!

Drifter2007,
I want you to know that reading your post and the reply's have made me stop and think how very fortunate I am.
I can tell that you are an avid outdoorsman as well as a devoted husband and father. It must be tough to be in Iraq and be only able to dream about your family along with the fishing and hunting back home.
Thank you so very much for the sacrifices you are making:applause: for us back home.

TY, I do appreciate it.
This trip seems to be a little harder on the heart than my other deployments. I am glad that it is a little shorter, only about 9 months in country this time. This is number 4 and I hope it is my last.
Thanks again!

You might try the Ollallie lake area. You can launch a drift boat in Ollalie and Monnan(SIC) lake next door, there are lots of hiking trails in the area. The road continues on thru past 3-4 more drive up lakes --road is rough beyond Monnan but driveable in any suv. There are dozens of little hike to lakes within a 45 minute walk. By September, and during the week it is less busy , the roads are decent. It is a great family spot with reliable fishing , are you familar with the area??? I take me family there almost every year it is a great spot. It sits a a lovely basin with veiws of mt. Jefferson.

I went to Ollalie a couple of years ago for the first time. I had a good time camping and fishing, my wife is very put off about the area because of the rowdy dope smoking hippies that were camped next to us. They didn't seem to think that all the drugs they were doing and talking about within ear shot of our kids was a problem.
Myself, I would like to give it another try, you can run into a bad camping scenario anywhere. My red headed wife on the other hand wants nothing to with the area.
Sure is a beautiful lake.

sorry for the late reply, but ive fished there for a while too....... and i have caught some dandy fish in there the best time for the BIG cutts is during deer season????? i found that out a few years back during general season. i was just throwing spinners around the brush and consistantly caught fish 15-20 inches. i have also caught some good brookies up to 17-18 inches trolling flies.

Please let me know when you stop by there. I am still curious if I could launch a drift boat, doesn't need much for a ramp, even a slide. I will be home and possibly there in mid sept.:excited:

The ramp atRound lake is a dirt ramp. You should have plenty of room to launch your db with no problems. may have to move a couple of logs out of the way and back down a few yards but it can be done.
PM me when you head up there. The wife and I and our four legged child (very friendly dog) would love to come up and say hello to all of you.

We can't wait to get you home either...and I think I speak for a few more folks other than myself when I say that this is one place where I'm more hta happy to see my tax dollars spent.
In the meantime, I include a couple of pics from day at Round Lake at the beginning of this month. ( Finally figured out that picture posting thing! )http://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/Round_Lake.jpghttp://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/RL_Cutts.jpg
Apologies for the quality of the second one, it was snapped in something of a hurry as it was threatening to T-Storm at the time.

Daly Lake up on the Satniam Pass is about as short a hike as you'll find; about 1/4 mile. We started going there a couple of years ago and had a 6 year old in tow. When they get tired, it's only a short walk out.

I am not sure, I am figuring on making it home around the 6th to 8th. I am wanting to hit the cascades west side before the 12th when the rifle deer hunt opens, so maybe sometime in that next week. I am trying to get as much time as possible, but with family I won't get that much time in the woods.
