View Full Version : Trout Fishing Suggestions?
Hi, my friend, who used to live in Colorado and has been living in Oregon for nearly a year now, wants to go trout fishing around the Hillsboro/Beaverton area. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go in order to get her into some fish? Keep in mind, we will be going from the bank, not a boat. I know Dairy creek has some fish in it when it is high, but I'm not sure about this time of year. I'm also not sure where good access points are located. Any specifics or suggestions would be appreciated. PM me if you don't want to give away your secret location to the rest of the world. I have also heard Hagg Lake is an option but have never fished it before. Any locations/methods for fishing Hagg Lake would also be appreciated. Normally I wouldn't ask for honey holes, but I really don't want to get skunked and have her think Oregon is worse than Colorado for trout fishing. Thanks in advance.

Your best bet this time of year is probably Hagg Lake and it has been pretty slow lately. It hasn't been stocked since early June and won't be again until mid September.
The small streams in the Beaverton/Hillsboro area are all pretty low right now and would be hard to fish. They are also restricted to the use of lures & flies only and to catch & release fishing.
Hagg is pretty warm so the trout will be deep. Some areas that you can access deeper water from the bank would be around boat ramp "A", some of the Scoggins Creek arm, and some areas along the South & South West shore about a half mile past the South end of the dam. The technique would be using various Power Bait products or night crawlers floated a couple feet off the bottom early in the morning. Here is the web site for a map of Hagg Lake.

Oregon IS worse than Colorado for trout fishing, particularly following a couple of weeks of 100 degree weather. I would go to Hagg Lake, but target smallmouth and perch rather than trout in this stinkin' heat. It's much more likely to be productive and they're better to eat.
Otherwise, jetty fishing is always a way to escape the heat and do something they don't have in the Midwest/CO.
I haven't been out trout fishing in almost three weeks now....the heat puts trout off the bite almost all day, and I get no pleasure seeing the ones I release go belly up because of the stress of being caught in bathtub warm water.

I was at hagg today for the afternoon. I got there around ten and thought I would do a little bit of fishing and just caught small perch so I decided to swim for the rest of the day. If you really want to catch trout than head somewhere in the cascades. there are many reservoirs on the clackamas, santiam, and willamette that hold up pretty well for trout this time of year. there is also a lot of lakes at mt hood. The water will be a lot cooler there and most get stocked throughout the summer. Another option is fishing for cutthroat on the coastal rivers.

If you want to catch hatchery trout check out the ODFW stocking schedule here,

Recently stocked locations are always a great place to fish and have a good time. If you find public roads along lakes and rivers you'll also find bank access.
Hope you find a great spot, have some fun and catch fish.

Another thought would be to rent a boat at Hagg Lake. Try it there when the weather cools a bit. Fishing is slow right now. We tried it yesterday morning. Two of us & only caught 2 trout. They were nice & fat though, 13" & 15". We fished from a boat & tried a lot of different methods. Trolled several different setups, still fishing with eggs, etc. The only thing that worked to get those 2 fish was the chartreuse powerbait. Fishing for bass, crappie, & bluegill can also be fun when the trout aren't biting.
Good luck.

I also live in the Hillsboro area..as an FYI just got back from the Detroit Lake area - only about an 1.5 hr drive - the N. Santiam above the lake was stocked last Monday with 3k trout. We actually had better luck up the Breitenbush river. Caught a couple 12-14" (on my kids snoopy pole..yay me!!) while they swam. Good luck & good fishin!

August is a good month to fish in the mountains, not the valley. If you want to fish Hagg, wait till the fall. It can be excellent in October.
