I went up to lost lake for the first time last year, a beautiful spot with great sites. Your son and wife will be totally happy. We threw spinners from a short wade from shore. We did that for a few hours in the evening hooking up with about a dozen stockers between the two of us. We did notice a lot of fish hitting the surface at dusk, although neither of us is a fly fisherman, I would bet on good success tossing a fly. Also I have tried to reach the lake twice now through Lolo Pass with no luck, either the road or a bridge is always washed out to the point my 4X4 couldn't make it, so I suggest taking 84 and getting to the lake through Hood River. Fish On! Oh Yeah forgot to mention the staff is totally helpful so don't Hesitate to ask for their advice.

Lolo pass is open to the lake, but that is the last way I'd ever go. The road is pretty beat up and towing a trailer through there was not my idea of fun.
Oh I used, Gulp floating fire eggs and a small treble hook with an egg sinker and about 4' of leader. Long lining flies on the troll seems to be the most productive method. Check in at the lodge they have a map of the lake and likely spots as well as fly patterns.

One of my favorite Mountain Lakes! Was just there a few weeks ago. I've caught stockers off the north end day use area, and also the fishing area near the boat ramp using powerbait. At dusk when u see surface action you can slay them with silver and blue Kastmaster's! Last year during one of the heat wave day's my wife and I each caught 27"+ brooders out of the rented row boat. Fantastic lake.

Back in the day we would troll a mosquito with 12' if 1# leader 100+ feet
behind he boat with spinning gear. Lots of fun for the kids.
