OK - gonna start this off as GP has been slow, but I think it is going to pickup. I have watched an asortment of threads pop up but hopefully we can consolidate all these reports here.
I fished with my young boys yesterday at GP from 3:00 PM until about 6:30. We just ran across from Thistle and worked the south bank between there and the Island. Fish were at about 30-40 feet. We didn't do very hot, but we caught every fish we hooked and that was only 4 of them. Each time we trolled through a school we got one and that was fun for my boys.
One of the fish hit but I could not get the down-rigger released. I finally was forced to pull up the rigger and reel the pole at the same time. Realized the line was wrapped up in the release. The fish was still on, so I yelled for my 4 year old (Seth) to grab the rod. Elijah my 2 year old, came running with the net. Seth is barking orders to get the net in the water meanwhile he has the Koke over the side and pulling him in and out of the water - skippin' along the surface!!
God sure does have grace on us as the fish was firmly hooked and the boys double teamed him into the boat. Some guy who was close enough to observe had a good laugh watching them.
When we pulled out we found another guy who had located a LOT of fish - they had gotten 33 fish during the same amount of time! Just two rods. So there are some fish to be had.
Our fish were 3 small ones with one big bruiser that was very nice fileted.
:D Go get em'

The Kokanee fishing at GP has shifted into the downrigger show at a fairly specific depth. A detailed FF is essential to find the clusters of fish. They are there and if you locate where they are hanging out and you are at the right depth you should catch more fish then you want. I fished the same day with my 5 year old and we couldn't keep both downriggers running without hooking fish. We fished for 3 hours and put 30 fish in the box mostly 12-16 inches. we also released many more small ones and lots of extended releases. The hardware used was mostly spinners from pink to yellow and green. In my opinion GP is mostly a spinner lake but constantly switching colors is important
I believe you talked with me at the boat launch? The general theme was the fishing was slow.
Moving around trying different places is a good idea. I will be back next week trying to find some more fish. The island area will produce fish but in my opinion it's very over fished. Location...Location... move around until you find the fish.
I saw a few boats at the dam... Any reports?

I,m going tomorrow for the first time this year. I have made a couple trips the last few years with some good and some slow days. I tried the hoochie thing but green wedding rings seemed to work the best. The kokes we did get were bigger than in normal years. This leads me to believe there are fewer numbers over all. In years past we could catch tons of fish but they were skinny and lucky to hit the 10 inch mark. I will post a report tomorrow when I return.

Fished there yesterday, 26th with some limited success. Used pink hoochies and dodgers primarily..when you say spinners, do you mean wedding rings or some other kind of spinner..i.e. rooster tail etc..also, do you put whit ecorn on your spinners..appreciate the help. You will see me in a white Smokercraft 18.5.....Thanx for any help you can give me.. I agree with your theme of keeping changing until hit it..but have never fished sp;inners much.

I make my own spinners and they are a cross between a wedding ring and a regular salmon spinner. I purchase colorado blades (I think #4) from several different places. The colored ones seem to be the ticket this year yellow with a green dot in the center. The bodies are a combination of wedding ring type and small colored beads. The fun part is coming up with a color combination that works and every year it is different. I think the most important part of my spinner is the hook. I have tried every type of hook from single to treble. There is no question in my opinion that the #10 VMC treble hook catches more fish. For catching Kokanee of the size of 12-18" it is the ticket. I tip the hook with corn (yes scented). This combination also works at Wickiup. I have been using Rocky Mountain Tackle dodgers red and Pink. Troll very slow just enough to make the spinner work
Just a thought about time of day? Two times this year I have had incredible bites after 2pm.
Good luck, I hope this will help.

Fished Saturday with an old friend from 7- 2pm. We kept 6 fish from 12" to 14.5". Released 4 or 5 small kokes and probably had 10 or so bites that didn't stick. We trolled wedding rings first with very few bites. Switched to 00 dodgers and green uv hoochies with 16" leaders and hooked up immediately. Corn soaked in ProCure krill worked the best for us. Graphed fish mostly around 30' and 45' levels. We had the best luck at the 45' level. The best location for us was up river from the floating toilet where the resevoir narrows up abit before it kind of forks. Most bites were fairly tight to the bank for us. Made one troll from the dam back to the ramp and had 3 bites but didn't land any. We trolled at 45' again. Good luck and hope this helps someone.

Snake Ranger1 - yep, that was us. My boys fortunately didn't really understand what 33 fish were! So they just told the story that some guy caught a WHOLE BUNCH!!! Good to see you out with your kid! That fishery lends itself to some good times with children.
We went back Sunday afternoon and had the whole family onboard. Mostly just toured the lake and hit a few beaches. Then we did dump the gear in so the girls could each catch a fish and do some netting.
I agree, that it seems the fish are very depth specific and also if you have GPS, mark the school and turn around and come back through cause the fish we were on did not move much.
I'll try spinners on one rod next trip. I've been using a pink hoochie with a weird spinner type plastic thing in front of it. With two hooks on this rig, they stick every time.
Hope to see you back up there again soon!

I fished Sunday and did ok. We caught all of our fish down by the dam fishing at thirty feet pulling flashers and W/rings. The florescent rings were the most effective. Brought home 5 nice fish and lost at least 5 more at the boat.

Fished between island and outhouse this morning getting 5 for 10 before wind blew me off about 9:30. GPS marking of schools very good idea. Pink hoochies and dodger did trick this morning.
I was there Saturday with my grandson and he caught his first fish, four in fact, largest was 14.5, 45 feet with hoochies and apex.
Went back Sunday for a couple hours by myself and picked up three more, largest 15", 50 feet, hoochies both orange and pink. Threw several little ones back.
Both days the flasher was a uv slingblade. That is now my go to dodger (with the correct bend) and both days were around the island. None of the bites were at the schools we marked but about 5 minutes after we passed the school. I have to assume they were following trying to make up their minds. I tried changing speeds and turning but the would not bite until they were ready.
Sounds like there were several of us there. Next time we should post before we go so we can look up each other on the lake.

I went on Monday afternoon with my son to try the afternoon fishing again. We fished for less than 2 hours and he decided it was time to go home. The fishing seemed a little slower than our last trip. we caught 6 Kokanee and another bonus Chinook (19" 2.2 lbs). The Chinook was caught at 50 feet with a hoochie spinner gold blade homemade. All Kokanee caught at 40-60 feet with 50 being the best location. I will be trying first daylight Thursday before the wind picks up.
Question about the Chinook? I have heard of several Chinook caught over 4 lbs. Has anyone heard of anything larger than this?

I was there Thursday fishing solo until about 2pm. The bite has changed from last weeks can't keep them off the hook to having to work at getting them to bite. They are biting very soft with many missed hook ups and many lost fish at the boat. The hoochie set up was working but receiving far less hook ups. The spinner with a very small treble hook was way more active (Green\yellow and white\pink). The fish are somewhat small. I caught lots of 10-11' little guys. The fish that went into the cooler were 12-15" with most fish being at the 14" range (19). All fish caught at 50'. I also picked up a Chinook 2lbs 8ozs (20"). Try different scents it could be the thing that makes them bite.
dutch, thanks for the post... It was also good talking with you about the fishing. I hope the spinners will work for you next time. You were definetly fishing in the right place and you will probably see me there again. I should be back fishing next week sometime.
Can someone explain how you bend the slingblade...?
I grab each end and bend it until I feel like it is going to break. Don't worry, it won't break. You want the bend to be a little more towards to wide trailing end. A good description I heard once was to bend it so that it fits across the top of your leg, of course that depends on the size of your leg.
Run it beside the boat and see how it affects the hoochie, if you want more action just bend it a little more.
I always keep one bent and one straight of each kind, using the straight ones for the faster speed trolling like with an apex that supply their own action.
I plan on being at GP on Sunday morning the 5th, maybe alone, maybe with the wife. Look for a 16' alumaweld talon if you are there.

I just started fishing here a few years ago. Is it normal for them to draw down the water this early? I have been there just once this year with limited success. My son did catch the biggest Koke I have ever seen. 18".

LB - Lake level is dependent on flows in the river. Certain cfps must be maintained in the river, therefore the change in lake level. Some years the lake is at full pool at this time of year and some times it isn't as in this year. Snow runoff is pretty much complete so any retention of water in Green Peter depends on precipitation. Thus, I expect to see nothing but lower, and lower lake levels throughout the summer. That is not always a bad thing. IMO Green Peter fishes slightly better at lower levels.

We fished Green Peter Friday 7-3-09 and Saturday earning morning 7-4-09. Friday morning first thing we caught eight between 5:30am and 6:30am and then it tailed off from there. A green UV hoochie behind a green UV dodger from Rocky Mountain Tackle was the best producer early on. Otherwise we had our success on a fluor. red APEX behind a RMT UV pink dodger. We found the fish in the 50 foot range. We ended the day with 19. We went out again very early Saturday morning thinking it would be good early and surprisingly it wasn't. We never got a thing on a green hoochie but did manage to catch 5 with the fluor rend APEX. We found the point just east of the Whitcomb Cr. boat launch to be a good spot as well as the area between the island and floating restroom. We came back to Harrisburg for the 4th of July parade and walked with my daughter with her miniature horse. Headed back to G.P. in the afternoon for the rest of the weekend so we'll see if we can catch a few more kokes.

Thanks for the input. That is what I thought, but it never hurts to ask. The day my kids and I went is was very slow. We caught our fish on pink wedding rings with a double hook set up.

Quick report on GP this morning... got on the water about 6:30 today, and the water was like glass, and it was already a beautiful day. Got into some Kokes near the island, at about 50 feet, hooked 6, lost 2 at the boat, and let one small one go. The other three were a tasty BBQ this afternoon. :) All three were between 12.5 and 13.5 inches. We got bites from about 6:45, till about 9am, then as I hear is usual, the wind kicked up, and the bite died off. All fish were caught on red wedding ring setups, with a trailer hook, and the white gulp maggots. Had a quick hello with DLM out there, always nice to see a fellow iFisher on the water.

We fished the 4th - 3 rods and had a great time. Most of our fish we caught at the 40-50 foot range.
We hooked about 20 with only 6 in the boat.
Most were 15"

Hello all,
Just got onboard here, great to find a site on the local fishing.
Son & I finally tried GP for the first time last week, after years of hearing about the kokanee there.
We had a great early morning time on the lake, but caught no fish/no bites. Pure inexperience no doubt. Would appreciate a basic primer on how you guys do kokes at GP, or if you know of any articles on the basics please point me there. (Most of my fishing life has been on rivers and streams, so the whole lake picture is pretty much new to me.)
We fished the Quartzville arm up near the 2nd bridge from 7am-noon.
Saw quite a few fish on the FF (1st time using a FF), including small groups of fish, between 35-50 feet.
Our rigging included one downrigger (1st time using a d-r), with flashers & wedding ring; and one rod w/ cowbell & wedding ring. Later tried spinners r-tails, etc, as well, both on d.r. and loose rod. We could see the fish on the FF but no bites, not even sure if they were kokes.
On the d-r we rigged as follows: ball; 10Ft leader; cowbell flasher; release clip; wedding ring (tried gold, silver, pink, green) w/ w.corn(frozen). Put the release after the cowbell so we could play the fish on just the w.ring .
Maybe this is the wrong setup ? Maybe the wrong location ? Next time I plan to try the island and surrounding points.
Appreciate any advice you can give a koke beginner. Been fishing my whole life, but this is all new to me. Heck, I dont even recognize some of the terminology you guys are using :-) !
Cheers,
Bob

Best advice I could give you to start is read, read, read. Learn how to use the search option on this forum and you will find the answer to just about every question you have.
Your rigging is a little off if I am understanding it correctly. The release is usually located in one of three places.
1. Directly to the ball
2. On a clip about 2-3 feet above the ball
3. On the end of a set of flashers that are attached directly to the ball.
Running 10 feet of leader behind the ball and then attaching your flashers and then the clip will hamper good solid hooksets, may prevent the flashers from working properly and it will put your tackle 8-10 feet above your ball, making judging your actual depth difficult.
Try this thread for starters, is will scare the *&(% out of you.
Oh ya, don't freeze your corn unless it's on your toe.

Thanks DLM,
I had heard somewhere that you need a long leader between the ball and the lure, to keep ball from scaring the fish. I was really wondering whether my rod was lifting the tackle above ball depth, seems like it would have to just with the line drag.
If I can put the flashers right on the ball and the release at the end of the flashers, or on a clip off the cable a few feet above ball, that'd be great.
My objective was to leave the heavy stuff down there and just fight the koke on the w. ring or whatever is the final lure.
Your link is great, tons of info on the tackle and lures. I thought I had a pretty good batch of stuff together for koke fishing, but now I can see that I haven't even started to get equipped !!!
Cheers,.

Went to GP evening of the fith and boat camped for fishing Monday. Got an early start but my luck was not so good. My fishing buddy Bob, had the active Rod, even though we were using the same gear. We threw everything at em, Hoochies, Wedding rings, Hot Shot, Apex, etc. Fish are there and getting nice and fat. We talked to Salmon Troller near the Island and he had fish in the boat.
We ended up spending a good portion of the day around Tally Creek where we saw one guy netting fish left and right, he must of got his limit, I lost count of how many he netted. He was using a sling blade and a silver Apex. A color we did not have. he followed a school around and trolled at 45'. We thought we had GP dialed in pretty good, but this guy schooled us.
We picked up a few and headed East after a while and picked up a couple more. I will say the ones Bob caught east, were much nicer then the ones the guy was netting at Tally. We kept one decent bow as well.

Here is an add on to my earlier post for the July 4th weekend. We fished parts of the 3 day weekend and ended up with 35 fish in the cooler. Some were in the 12 - 13" size range, some were smaller. But we had a grand prize catch - a 21", 4 lb. Chinook. We caught the Chinook at 45' between the island and floating restroom using a fluorescent red Apex and corn with a pink/red Sling Blade. What a thrill!

HI all,
Still working on figuring out the kokanee game, all very new to me.
DLM gave me some good pointers on DR setup and the Tech tips link.
Looking there I see the myriad of lures for kokes....one thing strikes me as odd, there are no flies. Being a flyfisherman & fly tyer since I was a kid (59 now), and looking at all the colors and flash of the various lures in the techtips section, it seems to me like a smaller version (#6, 8) of some of the traditional flashy salmon/steelhead fly patterns would be killer in place of a wedding ring or hoochie. ...with the requisite white corn of course.
Has anyone ever tried flies as terminal lure behind the flashers for kokes ?With regular flyrod gear the biggest challenge in lakes is getting your fly down to where the fish are... now I have a DR to solve that problem !
I am going to tie up some minature versions of the more flashy salmon/steelhead flies before my next GP trip, hopefully yet this week...will let you know how what happens.
+Peace,
Bob

Good luck to all, GP has many more good days ahead!
Went on Tuesday after talking with you guys with my pink hoochies...island and floating rest room..kinda slow but some bites...visited with an older gentlemen fishing in area of restroom ..just he and his dog ...was doing well ...after a bit went to restroom at Quartzville arm and found him trolling there about 11:00..told me he had 21 in the boat all by himself..kind enough to share using bright orange/red hoochie and dodger..managed to find a couple from RMT in my box and put them on..ended day about 2:00 with 12 in boat..lost quite a few as well...so, maybe I go to orange tomorrow versus pink....we shall see.
HI all,
Has anyone ever tried flies as terminal lure behind the flashers for kokes ?With regular flyrod gear the biggest challenge in lakes is getting your fly down to where the fish are... now I have a DR to solve that problem !
I am going to tie up some minature versions of the more flashy salmon/steelhead flies before my next GP trip, hopefully yet this week...will let you know how what happens.
+Peace,
Bob

After reading that this was the "secret weapon" at a lake in another state, I tied up a brown mudder ( I think that is the name) behind an apex. I have tried this on GP under various conditions but have never had hit on it..

Fished GP today...7/9...18 on board...using bright red/orange hoochie behind Sling blade..near island as well as quartzville arm..pretty good bite until about 11:00..then died out.
Met a guy when putting in my boat who had great luck yesterday; showed me what using; apex in bright orange color.
Orange my be popular at this point but it will change tomorrow. Lake continues to drop but still ok for launch at upper ramp. Good luck!

Wondering if anyone does any good in the PM/evening at GP. It's the only time I can go.
Also, how long into the summer will the fishing hold up ? Do the kokes spawn & quit biting ?
Basic questions, I'm new at this game.

I fish them thru August...about that time males start to get a little ugly, but females look pretty healthy. then the salmon bite st arts and off the kokes.

Fished GP this evening until the PM showers came in. I'm new to the kokanee game, was trolling with corn on a wedding ring (no downrigger). I must not know what I'm doing....might have needed more lead to get down. I was trolling in a kayak by the dam.
HEY, if you're the two guys in a white van that helped me by hauling my yellow kayak up the "ramp" in your boat trailer-- let me know, I think you still have my paddle-- I lost it. No kidding (how could I make this up!).

Short, sweet, and to the point this time.
7-10
11 Fish kept, 6 released, and 5 lost. 45 - 50 feet, STC UV sling blade, R&K hoochie.
7-11
Finally a good day! 32 fish in the boat, 10 of which were released and under 10", same story, 45 - 50 feet, sling blades and hoochies again. Had to change colors late in the morning. Bright colors worked early, purples later. Bite just flat turned off at about 11, dealt with wind ALL day. Largest fish 15".

Another good day. 35 fish in the boat, mostly on sling blades and hoochies. Murphy bugs and silver apex worked as well. Depth continues to be 45 - 50'. Fish have been caught from the dam to middle fork in the past two days. Hope this trend continues.

I fished GP all day on 7/13 using downriggers between 40-50' depending on where the fish where showing on the finder. We used custom tied green wedding rings with double trailing #6 Gamakatsu red circle hooks tipped with Pautzke Fire Corn and Berkely Gulp Maggots (white). We had a very quick hot bite at about 6a and then another around 3p both on the far side of Whitcomb Island. A few other fish throughout the day for a total of 13 - all but 2 were 14-15" - very nice shape fat fish! Lake was like glass for most of the day so we kept the speed under 1 mph. Only about 6 or so other boats until about midafternoon. Plenty of parking at the Whitcomb ramp for a change.

Very, very late start today. Lost my partner at the last minute, decided to fish solo and didn't get on the water until around 11:30 and finished up around 4:00. Still managed 15 fish. Largest 15". Guess I should have been there for the bite!!

I have been slaying them on hoochies. I run about ten inches behind the dodger. For best results make sure you are running UV hoochies and when one slows down switch to another color until you are back in the money:twocents:

Will run hoochies as short as 6", if necessary. All depends how much "wiggle" the dodger ahead of it gives it. Take a look at it in the water alongside the boat at normal trolling speed. That will tell you the story.

With Joes gone, is there any other places locally (Albany) selling Hoochies? Bi-mart is pretty limited and they were out of stock yestereday and the girl was putting out inventory and no hoochies :( She did mention they were going to add to their tackle inventory, sales have trippled since Joes went.
Closest would be sportsmans in Salem. I get all mine from Shasta tackle or Rocky Mountain Tackle. Rocky Mountain sells them both rigged and in packets of 4 without hooks and you can tie up your own, which I do to save $$.

Got on the water at 6:00am Saturday the 18th. Put the first fish in the boat around 7:00. using 4/0 dodger and green speckled hoochie with some corn and worm at 50'. Picked up one more in this area between the island and restroom. Lot's of boats congregated there. Saw one boat using what looked like a Flash Lite set up with wedding ring in the same area and they caught about 5 in about 30 minutes. The rest of the boats were pretty slow as well, a fish or miss here and there. We tried around Talley creek for a while and got nothing, we picked up a smaller koke in front of the Whitcomb ram at 35'. We also tried down by the Dam after the wind picked up. Same rod (my buddies) caught the 3 fish. On the other rod I tried the same set up, a Flash lite rig with a wedding ring, sling blade with apex, dodger with multiple colors of Hoochies and I got one strike for all that. We fished until 1:00.
Not sure what was going on, reports have been good but there didn't seem to be much of a bite today, unless it was just me. We fished between 35-60'
Good luck to everyone.

Prowler - FYI, DanDee Sales in Sweet Home is now stocking size 3 Shasta Tackle uv dodgers in addition to 5 or 6 colors of their uv hoochies. Next closest place with any koke gear at all is Sportsmens Warehouse in Salem. It is too bad, but the unavailability keeps sending me to the internet.

Saturday we fished the south side of the lake below the island. Had the first fish in the boat within 10 minutes of dropping the downriggers at about 6:15. Fishing was steady until about noon. At about 1:00 PM picked up a 20" chinook and the bite was back on. I was burned out by 2:00 PM so we decided to troll back to the ramp and call it a day. Hooked the biggest koke of the day (17") off the point of the ramp @ 55'. Ended the day with 21 in the boat all over 14". We released a bunch of smaller koke's so they could get a little size. We were fishing hoochies with matching dodgers. Started out with chartruse and finished with purple. Used anise/krill scented corn with a small chunk of worm.

Took a friend yesterday that has been fishing for kokanee for many, many years. He uses a spinning rod with beer can trolls, snubber, and spinner. After my third fish in about 20 minutes and he without even a strike, he thought maybe he would try my spare rod which was rigged with a sling blade dodger and hoochie. Bang!! Fish on. We had a very enjoyable day on the water finishing the day with 36 kokanee up to 16". And I think my friend was on his way to Salem today to find some new tackle. :) Converted another one. :D

I took an old fashioned fisherman fishing the last four Fridays. He insisted on the pop gear and all of that hardware. I caught fish and he went without or almost. Talked him into trying my style last Saturday. The smile on his face when he got into the fish was worth the effort! He still might revert back to the old style of trolling but I would guess that he will be more inclined to try the dodger/ matching hoochie when fishing for Koke's. Leaded lines with all of the kinks are nothing short of a pain where I sit down. A fish on the line with virtually nothing between you and them is an adrenaline sport!

Thanks for the info Capron. I am another one like your friend, still trying to figure out this kokanee game. Have never tried anything but f.fender with snubber & wedding ring.
A big step for me this summer was getting a small downrigger and though we couldnt afford it, my dear wife got me a fishfinder for Fathers Day.
SO, I am slowly getting equipped. But when you guys talk about hoochies and dodgers, that's new rigging to me. Only time I used dodgers was for offshore salmon. What size ? Do you just tie up the hoochie with a hook behind the dodger ?
Looking at the tackle racks in the stores, there are lots sizes dodgers, etc....I am studying the tech section here too, learning slowly, I hope.
Only been up 4x this summer, our best day was 6 fish, 2-13". Off Whitcomb Point.

With Joe's gone now, I am ordering directly from Shasta Tackle or Rocky Mountain Tackle..although sportsman warehouse in salem has some stuff. An earlier post mentions DanDee Tackle in Sweet Home..might be worth a try. Downrigger a must. Dodger I use is 4-4/2 inch long...actaully, I like sling blades better of same length ..get the UV ones if you can.(tip: bend the sling black over your thigh some to get a nice curve..works even better) Then purchase several colors of double hook rigged hoochies...I would recommend you have inventory of different coloars...chartreuse, pink, orange, white, and I gues purple works now. Keep your leader short, i.e. about 8-10" behind sling blade as the blade will then give it some action. If you just tie on the hoochie with leader that comes with it you will have no action on your hoochie..i.e. cut the leader down some. Lately, some folks have been catch kokes using Apex luhrs...have not had much luck with them but others have...use the longer leader and a bright orange for starters. Whatever you do, tip your hooks with Shoepeg corn. Can try different scents if you want, krill, shrimp krill etc. Good luck

[QUOTE=dlm;2613390]Best advice I could give you to start is read, read, read.
Hi DLM,
Thanks again for the tips, really helping me on the water, though I still need to change some things so I can start catching kokes like you pros here !
Regarding release location, I have seen several references to 'clipping' on to the d.r. cable above the ball.
What does such a 'clip' look like, is it just a standard release clip, attached "backwards" to the cable ?
If so do you use a heavier release for connecting to cable , and a lighter one after that to attach the rod line to ?
So far I have only used the release after the ball, with pads to rear, to hold the rod line... would like to try connecting above the ball if I can figure out how you do that.
Cheers,
Bob

Bob,
Most of the line releases are of two types
1. There is a clamp that snaps right on the cable and stays right there. This is the one that I like.
2. The second has two downrigger clips and a snaplink. The snap link snaps on the cable and the 2nd clip keeps your line at the desired position on the cable.
The first one is my fav because there are less moving parts to fail and it is real simple to snap on and off. This is a real plus if you are fishing more than one rod on the same DR. There is a photo of one on an earlier thread about downriggers.
http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-equipment/line-releases/images/large/1155_56_trollingSnaps.gif (http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-equipment/line-releases/images/large/1155_56_trollingSnaps.gif)
Ask for cable stackers or stacker clips. Anywhere that sells downriggers should have them.

Here is some more info from today. Yes there was in fact a boat that burned up today. Saw it but was way too far down the lake to help out. Lip Ripper and another boat or two were able to assist. Good job to those guys.:applause: It is my understanding that there were no injuries, just wet.
The fishing wasn't phenomenal today but not too bad either. Me and my guest managed 23 by 1400 today. Did best with sling blade dodgers and hoochies. The dodgers are size 3 and 4 1/2" long. Been doing best with smaller size hoochies. DanDee Sales in Sweet Home has some of the Shasta Tackle Dodgers and also some of their hoochies. Otherwise it is to Salem to Sportsmens Warehouse or order on the internet. Several vendors have dodgers and hoochies. For me R&K hoochies have been working the best lately, and I tie them with a stinger hook. Berkley maggots work well, but corn does as well. I have had about equal success on either lately. I use Sep's releases directly from the downrigger ball, relatively short setback, nothing over 25', and have had success from 30 - 60' in the past two weeks. A great read is a book by David Biser called Kokanee, A complete fishing guide. It is relatively inexpensive and will give you ALOT of info about kokanee and how to catch them. There are also some excellent articles online. The main thing is to just go out there and be persistent, pay attention to what is happening, and it will pay off. Best of 'catching' to those who are trying to learn, and to those that are realizing that the 'light' way of fishing isn't too bad either. I will never discredit ford fenders (or other trolls) with snubbers, banana weights, wedding rings, etc. because they have put PLENTY of fish in boats over the years. I am just an advocate of "lighter is better". Go get'em guys.

We fished Green Peter Friday 7-24-09, Saturday and Sunday. We fished mainly in the area south of the island and then also between the island and the floating restroom. Overall the fishing was good and we ended the weekend with 52 fish. Some were small, but there were some dandies in there too. We caught one that was an honest 16" and numbers in the 14 - 15 inch size. We had on what must have been a larger chinook and got it to the surface before it shook free. We fished in the 45 - 55 foot range. Saturday morning was stellar fishing. We found them deep that morning in the 55 foot range and the bite was fast and furious with pink or red dodgers and UV pink hoochies from Rocky Mt. Tackle with white corn, no scent. The standard 1.2 - 1.4 mph did the trick as ususal. We also caught fish on Apex lures, particularly the silver color. We launched at the Whitcomb boat launch but it is going to be unusable soon.

Ron
Thanks Ron,
I found the book on Amazon for ~ $10. Can't wait to get it.
Your details above are a big help, thanks.
What do you mean by " a relatively short setback, nothing over 25' " ?
I'm reading that as 25 feet. Do you mean 25 Inches ?
FYI, and others who are going to Sportsmans whse in Salem-- If you know where the Sportsmans whse was up Milwaukee on the west side of 82nd Ave off of the I-205 Johnson Creek exit... it was apparently sold and is open under a new name- can't think of it now, ANyway, they have a great selection and some killer deals on tackle, prices seem WAY better than the old S.W.
Regarding DanDeeSales in S.Home, I try to buy some hunting/fishing stuff there when I can as well. They are great people, local, and like me they also refuse to shop at Walmart ! ;-)
Cheers,
Bob

Hit the lake Monday 7-27 to get my nephew out for a few fish. The weather was hot and the bite was a little tougher than it has been lately. Managed 18 before I had to come in and hydrate. Thursday 7-30, we did a little better. Got 22 but the kid was having trouble keeping the fish on and we should have had around 15 more I'm guessing. The hoochie bite has turned off quite a bit but found a couple of spinners that picked up where they left off. The main body of the lake in open water has been good with the fish at around 50' or so. Temps have been in the 100's here which is pretty rare for the GP area and has made the fishing a bit more challenging. The main thing in my book is that the kid got some fish and had a pretty wide smile on his face. Mission accomplished.

We fished Green Peter Sat. 8-1-09 with good success. The launch at Whitcomb Cr. is really down there but we did manage to get the boat in the water. We started fishing around 7am and had good success for several hours. Pink UV hoochies from Rocky Mt. Tackle really worked well behind Sling Blade dodgers. A pinkish red UV dodger was quite effective. After the first several hours we continued to pick up fish throughout the day as the bite would come and go. We ended the day at 30 fish, with a mixture of 12-13" fish and smaller ones. We could not get the 14-15" fish to bite like last weekend. We caught most of the fish at 45-50' and then went to 55-60 later in the afternoon. We worked the area to the west and south of the island.
I was privileged to take a 10 year old boy fishing who's dream had been to fish at Green Peter. He caught 10 fish and was quite excited about it all.

What boat were you in? WE were in the white open sled. We did ok, Blue bead spinners at 50' worked really well later in the day. We caught fish with pretty much everything we tried. We even went "old school" and busted out the spin glows, Got a few on them.

Fished today from 8 till 2. Most fish came at 50' level. Caught a couple at 75'. No real big ones mostly 13" to 14" range and a few dinks thrown in. Lots of bites and long line releases but only managed to keep 10. Just couldn't get them in the boat. My son had almost all the bites. Hootchies didn't work well for us today. Old school green wedding ring with a small lake troll ahead of it in hammered half brass/ chrome worked best. It seems to me the water level is much higher than the last couple years at this time. Also last year I was fishing at 75' to 80' at this time.I had no problem with the Whitcomb Creek ramp but its days are numbered. The water is below the end of the dock at this time. This will probably be my last trip to GP the Columbia and B10 open its time to switch gears.

I really can't say how good the evening bite is, but I did catch 2 fish @ 7:30pm on Sunday August 2nd just before taking out at Whitcomb. We didn't catch very many, mostly swam to escape the heat.
good luck
Pretty good day on the lake yesterday. Picked up 17 of various sizes, largest was 15'. Morning hot time was 0600-0800, constant action.
Found the larger fish at 70', lots of fish at other depths but the fish at 70, while fewer, were larger, but still a little one would sneek in now and then. I lost track of the ones I released.
Ran in to Dan Feller and Dropshot. It is great meeting other IFISHERS.
By the way, you can watch a net sink all the way to the bottom on your FF in 120 feet of water. Don't ask me how I know this........:mad:

I got a really late start (hard to get going these days with our 6-week-old son to take care of...) and didn't get on the water until about 10:00.
This was the first chance I've gotten to try out the Cannon Sport-Troll downrigger that my father-in-law gave me.
I started out trolling a dodger/hoochie around the island. I saw lots of fish around 50' on the finder, but couldn't get a bite. It doesn't help that I left my corn at home.
After a while I switched to a flasher and a silver Apex. I managed to catch one little 9-incher that I drug around forever before checking my lure and a nice fat 13 incher before calling it quits at 1:30.
On the way out I ran into DLM, he had done a lot better than I did. After talking a bit we figured out that he had grown up two farms up the road from where I live now - small world!
This is the second trip in a row that someone has asked "have I seen the bow of that Zodiac on ifish?" I guess there just isn't that many people fishing out of bright red rubber rafts... :D

I have the clearish blue Stacked beads (wedding ring). I picked them up at the Fishermans Shacks.
Todays Report,
Got on the water at 6:30ish, Started fishing around the island, Fishing was spotty with mostly smaller fish. Moved west up the lake along the south bank and found good numbers of fish with very few biters. Pulled in the gear and ran up the lake past Talley creek. Very few fish up there. Ripped back past the island and scratched up a few more. Off the water at 3:00. We did waste about an hour and a half by beaching the boat and doing a deer/elk scout hike.
17 fish total, The largest being a super fat 15" male that was already starting to color up.
Most fish came on a green/white UV blade with green and clear UV beads. The spinner is a Rocky mountain tackle spinner. Fished that behind tandem RMT UV slingblade style dodgers. I did pick up a couple fish on a RMT pink UV hootchie 12"s behind a 4/0 dodger. Also picked fish up on various oher colored bead spinners. I personally dont think the Hootcies are all that everyone says they are.
As for bait we used a combo of Gulp maggots on the trailer hook and Pro cure Kokanee special scented corn. We also picked up some bites on red Fire Corn. I really like the Gulp maggots and the Fire corn. I mix up the bait combos until I find something they like It seems to change throughout the day.
We picked up fish from 45' to 65' deep. Marked a couple HUGE schools at 65' down to beyond 100. I have my depth range on the Lowrance down to just 100 feet so I dont know how deep the bottom of the schools were.
Hopefully I can get up there a few more times this year.
I run a 17' White open sled with merc motors and STS stickers on it. Say "Hi" if you see me out on the lake.

A little late report from 8/7, but first a word of thanks to everyone for sharing so openly your tricks and tips. You've given me and many others the opportunity to catch some fish, as well as keep my wallet light:D. In all seriousness, thanks!
We got to the lake 8/7 at about 6:30 to a steady drizzle and the breeze already picking up. Headed out near the island and immediately began picking up fish at 45' on a sling blade and green hoochie tipped with corn. After about two hours things began to slow, and shifted to a sling blade and pink / white hoochie at 60'. The rest of the day was steady - not hot and heavy, but steady. Weather dryed out and settled down to be a pleasant day.
Headed for the trailer at 3:30 with 21 fish, largest 15+ and a good average size.
Again, thanks again for your sharing!

Weekly report this time.
Monday 8-10, 22 fish, largest just over 15, most at 12 - 13. Depth 50 - 70'.
Thursday 8-11, 20 fish, largest just under 16, most taken at 55 - 60'.
I am finding the fish are not schooling too much yet and are pretty well scattered. Open water seems to produce more fish than working the edges. Fish had no real particular favorite, but if I had to pick one probably an orange hoochie.

Seemed pretty slow late last week at GP.
Tell me guys, is the time for kokes winding down at GP ?
On another note, maybe someone can explain this to me, a newbie with fishfinders:
I occasionally see fish on the screen at say 40 or 50 ft, but the bottom depth flashes much shallower numbers, like 15-30 ft !
This is when I know I'm in 200 ft of water !
Any explanations ? My manual doesn't say much about it.
Other times the unit seems to work fine.
It's a Humminbird 727.

Sounds like you are getting a shadow. You could also be hitting a thermocline which is where the cold water abuts the warmer surface layer. Try adjusting the sensativity down. I am sure there are guys here that can articulate this better than I.

Daddyrunner,
We camped directly across from Tally Creek, so towards the east end of the lake. Not sure the water level now but there was a good place to tie off the boat and a trail leading up to a very well established camp spot. The other place I've seen but have not camped at is just east and south of the floating rest room, the one near the island.
Good luck and have a great time!

0800-1400, two of us, 30 fish. Spoke to another angler that had 28. So a pretty good day all in all. No particular hot spot, and not one lure working better than others. Kept switching up, catch a couple, then quit. Change out, catch a couple then quit. I was a "working" day to get that many. Only consistency was maybe depth, at 50'.

None of ours. Didn't see any boats down that far on the lake. Lower parking lot has two parking spaces showing, so it is getting down there.

Fished Mon-Tue-Th as well..great fishing..nice size. Males just starting to look a little spawnish..boy do they fight now..must be mad or something. Pink hoochie work well; had some luck as well with a orange apex behind sling blade. Center of lake by island and back worked well..wind held down nicely on Thursday. I will call it a year after next week and begin to chase those nooks! Good fishing.

Now I have always read that you want to troll very slow for kokes but in my experience up at green Peter was when we were trolling faster then most people we not only caught kokes we got on average 15 to 16 inch kokes.
Just theory but if you troll the speed you troll for ocean salmon your catch size will greatly increase and you will catch just as many.

I fished yesterday from 8:30 to 1:30 only caught 3 fish small all very bright and small 10" or so. I wonder if these are next years spawners?
Got in 3 hours at GP on Monday, line in the water at 0715, out at 1015. Boated 14, threw two back. The two smaller one's in the photo were 10" and I wanted to send them back swimming but they would not have survived. Largest was 15.25 and had the darkest red meat I have seen all summer. Scale condition was great, very bright and shiney fish.
Going deep was the name of the game. First fish caught, five minutes after getting to depth, was a small fish at 60 feet. I was also seeing fish at 80 feet so I thought maybe the bigger ones were deeper. I was right.
Pink glow sling blade with a hot pink glow mini-hoochie teamed with anise soaked corn on both hooks was the hot item. I kept using this until I lost the back hook. I think I probably damaged the knot with the pliers while removing the hook. Then I kept the same dodger and put on a pink haze uv mini-hoochie and it worked just as well.
14 fish in 3 hours made for some very busy times, what with lowering to depth, reeling in fish, rigging back up and going back down to depth. I had three hits where the fish were gone after I got released from the clip.
They were still biting when I left but I had some family committments that I had to get to. I wish I could have stayed, would have been a limit out day.

Also fished GP Monday, saw DLM and can vouch for his success. Good Job! We picked up a few, or should I say Bob here picked up a few. Even with the same gear, the Starboard side was hooking up. I had three hits and that was it. How does that happen? I've been on both sides of the phenomenon and don't get it. but I do know I don't like being on the "no fish" side of the boat. :passout: We caught fish from 50' to 80' and used various Hoochie patterns and actually the green frog pattern was the consistent producer. Looked like others were using the pink combos with good success as well.

Well, I did get to real one in. Could not ask for better fishing weather, beautiful day on GP and probably last trip of the Summer for us. Time to get ready for huniting and Fall Salmon, but we'll be back later in the year.

Nice fish.
I have never seen a fish cleaning staion at GP before but have always always launched at Thisle Creek. Where is cleaning station that I see in the background of your pictures? Whitcomb County Park?
Thanks,
That would be the one at the boat launch, Sunnyside Park, Foster Lake.

I fished Green Peter the three days of Labor Day weekend. Saturday and Sunday were quite wet to say the least! Very little boat traffic for a holiday weekend. The fishing was quite good. We fished downriggers at 60 - 70 feet south of the island in the center of the lake. We used Sling Blade dodgers and pink hoochies or silver Apex's. We caught 62 fish for the weekend. There were quite a few of the nice 12 - 15 inch size fish and then some of next year's fish at 9 inches or so. Some of the larger fish were darkening up a bit but still tasted just fine. The UV pink hoochie from Rocky Mt. Tackle is my current favorite kokanee lure.
It's been a great year at Green Peter!

Yes, Sunnyside has the cleaning station and is convenient on the way home. Nice job Meyersdan on your weekend.

I'm thinking about fishing GP next week. Have never fished there but the recent posts lead me to believe that it might still be a Kokanee option for this year. Your opinion please:idea: Also, which ramp, if usable, is closest to the island that is referred too? Thanks for any input.

I am not sure but Thistle Creek ramp is probably the only one open. I fished it Saturday with no problems. Thistle creek is the first ramp you come to. You will be fishing at least 55-60 feet so downriggers will be a must.

Thanks Cannon. I'll look it over first since that seems practical. BTW, how did you do and if you did, what did you do it with?:)

Thanks Cannon. I'll look it over first since that seems practical. BTW, how did you do and if you did, what did you do it with?:) I didn't get there till almost 10:30. Did ok running a purple hoochie and dodger combination. Fishing was slow averaged about a fish every 20 minutes or so. Did best straight across the lake from the thistle creek boat ramp. I wasn't serious, just spending the day since my tuna trip canceled.

Fished GP on the 15th and 16th with very poor/slow results. Marked a bunch of fish but they weren't hitting my tackle boxes full of Koke offferings. Had a grand total of 7 fish for 14 hours and with two rods. All were males and losing scales; pale pink meat.
Thistle Creek ramp still good but, ahem--------cannot strongly advise going there. I'm putting up my Kokanee gear for the year. (3rd time!)

Hey guys-
What do you know about the kokanee spawning run ?
I'd assume they run up Quartzville Creek...
May be a sight to see, thinking of taking the grandkids up to see that-
Anyone know when they head upstream in force ???
Thanks,
Bob

I don't believe they spawn up quartsville.I have been told they spawn up tally creek which is up past the island. You will need your boat to get there. The gate over the dam is locked.Any way let me know if you find them I am curious now!
Good luck! Dave

Hmm interesting...
Thx for the info.
I was thinking they'd use all of the creeks feeding GP.
When they were originally planted in GP, was it into one of the feeder streams ? Seems they would follow back to the stream of birth, like all salmon.
Wonder if the F&G Dept knows anything about this.
I happened to be at Paulina one fall, yrs ago, when the kokes were running upstream, pretty neat experience.
So, sounds like there is no way to get a boat to the water now ?
Cheers,
Bob
