Just a little info here if anyone knows anything about this motor:
A friend is buying a lightweight boat 1996 era... which is 40 hp and has a rubber primer pump for starting... this strikes me as a possibly troublesome design..
Any thoughts if you know of this set up would be welcome...
thanks...

I'm not too sure of what you're asking, as all outboards have a rubber pump (squeeze bulb with one way valve)) in the fuel line to deliver fuel to the engine before starting it.

That is not what I am refering to.. and yes, they all have that.
What I am tying to describe is...
This motor also has a thumb sized rubber "button" on the upper front part of the motor area that apparrently squirts a little bit of fuel into the cylinder or carb instead of an old fashion choke linkage.
This to me seems like a very failable device.... and since I have not seen it on my newer motors... I am concerned that it is did not stand the test of time and was discontinued.
It is a 40 hp Mercury, 1996 or so.
Any one know was it really is ... or why they did it that way? Seems to me like a money saving attempt... ?
thanks...

Most newer (1980s on) carbed 2 stroke motors use a primer, not a choke (not including the small HP models), the difference is an electric start model has a button, switch, or you push the key in to activate it, others are automatic, so you don't need to do anything.
I don't think it would be something to worry about.

are you sure, its not a kill button?
