I have a co-worker that is going to Diamond Lake next week and would like to catch a few fish. He doesn't fish much but has a basic knowledge of what to do. He will be fishing from the bank so I'm looking to set him up with a basic slip sinker/power bait set-up. What I don't know since I've never fished there myself is the specifics...........

Slip Sinker size: (1/4oz, 1/2oz, ?)
Leader length and size:
Hook size:
Power bait color:
Other bait options:

Thanks, I would like to get him into a few fish so your input is appreciated.

slip weight size dont matter to much want your bait to float 1.5 to 2 feet off the bottom. colors charturse corn or rainbow is working i had best luck with charturse you can add a peice of work to and use power bait to float the worm

Fish at the north end of the lake if he is not renting a boat. That is where the water is the deepest, everywhere else is pretty shallow. A slip bobber and worm at roughly ten feet will work pretty good as well. Tell him he needs to rent a boat for at least one day if he is going over there.

This would be my recommendation based on my experience since the kill:

Size 12 or 14 treble (pending on brand) (or a single egg hook if want challenge and/or going to try and release)
This year used 3lb leader (clear) hoping for larger fish; however 2 & 3 lb fished the same for us as far as numbers this year)
Chartreuse or Rainbow powerbait
A worm with small piece of marshmellow or powerbait under a bobber also produced a few fish down closer to the weed beds.

Not sure how/why strategies change so much....20 some years ago all we ever used was a single patzke, then a few years later changed to velveeta for years, and since all the changes it seems to be a powerbait show. Not to metion where are all the fish in the shrimp beds (have the shrimp beds not recovered yet)....I had never even been to the weed beds (S end) in the first 15 years I fished the lake now it appears pretty spot fishing in the shrimp beds and cheese hole? My experience of course... Also I have only fished the lake early in the season...summer tactics may differ.

We killed them on slip bobbers with a nightcrawler for bait a couple weeks ago. There was a group of bankies just slaying the fish off the little pier on the launch next to the resort... most of them looked like they were using powerbait on the bottom. Chartruse or Captain America color seemed to be the most predominant flavors. :twocents:

One technique that got some big fish for us was to tie a smaller size hook on the mainline, bury the hook in the nightcrawler, cast it out into a "hole" in the weeds, and let it sink naturally. Make sure your drag is very loose, and when it reaches the bottom, lift your rod tip and reel in a few turns and let it settle again. When it shoots away from you, let it take some line until you feel a load and set the hook. What fun!
