View Full Version : Who makes a 25 hp jet?
My boat is rated for 25 hp and I'm interested in a new jet. I would prefer a Yamaha or Honda. I currently have a Yamaha prop. Which companies sell a 25hp jet that would be "legal" for my boat? I don't want any insurance issues from having too large a motor in case of a mishap/claim.
Thanks!

have you heard of people having issues with liability on large motors?

If you exceed the hull's rated HP, you can find yourself getting a nice fat ticket from the USCG or the sheriff/state police marine units - and might have insurance issues should something happen. Not to mention that if you go too high in HP, the transom might not hold the weight of the bigger motor. That wouldn't be a good thing at all.

I think he already is aware of this stuff. He wanted info on a motor that would be "legal" for his boat.
I don't know of a 25hp jet off hand, but there might be some after market thing you could bolt on the lower unit of your outboard in place of the prop.

Mercury makes a 25 Jet, but it's the same cubic inch motor as the 25/30 hp prop motor. If it's the 30 hp power head with a jet pump on it you would have about 21 hp at the nozzle.

I read this on the internet so it must be true.
It isn’t a violation of state or federal regulations to install or use an engine larger than
specified on the capacity label, but if your over-powered engine affects your boat’s
seaworthiness, a marine officer may cite you for reckless operation. And your insurance
company may refuse to cover you if your boat motor’s horsepower exceeds the boat’s
capacity.

merc used to make a 25/20 two stroke jet. I saw one on craigslist just the other day for a reasonable price.

I have never seen a factory 25hp jet, I know merc makes a factory 20hp jet, there was one on CL this week. I think it was a 99.
Good luck.

Mercury web site has a four stroke jet with 25 on the cowling, but as I said the displacement is the same as the 25/30 hp motors.

From the Mercury website.
FOURSTROKE JET 25 FEATURES
Only 25 horsepower FourStroke Jet in the industry offered as factory-standard
Stainless steel impeller provides durability and corrosion protection
Industry-leading battery-less EFI system provides trouble-free starting and smooth running in any weather and at all altitudes
Manual recoil with automatic decompression is standard on all models, even electric start models, for peace of mind - even if the battery looses its charge
Gas Assist (tiller models) or Power Trim (remote models) make lifting the outboard effortless
Tiller models feature robust side shift with positive detents for trouble-free shifting
Your other option would be to find a 35 HP prop, and a lower unit (pump) that would work with it (35 x .7 = 24.5).

Thanks for the replies!
Looks like I need a bigger boat.

I know Merc factory used to make a 2 stroke 25 hp jet, because I have one. I think it is a 97. Sometime in the history of making this motor they called it a 20 hp jet, because that is probably closer to the actual output, but mine was labelled a 25 on the cowling and also on the metal plate with the SN.
I have been thnking about selling it if you are interested.
