View Full Version : Pricing a motor...

I've got an 8hp 1989 Merc that has a pee problem. I've already swapped out the entire (EVERYTHING) water pump kit, and still no pee. I'm thinking its probably just a bug nest in the water supply tube, or maybe a corrosion blockage, but frankly, I'm tired of messing with it...
So, what kind of price should I put on it as a 'project' type motor. It ran great until I put it up for storage last fall (running the fuel out, etc.) but this spring, no pee...
Included with it is a bar style motor lock, tiller handle extension, and hydrofoil. (about $90 total) Oh, and all the pieces (cover, impellor, etc.) of the old water pump kit., and a 3 gal new tank.
Sounds like you are just tired of it, Probably just a carpenter bee
issue. Start @ 350 and see where it takes you.:)
You pay me to take it??

Mine had a wasp nest in the thermostat, a few minutes and you can be done with it. I stick a piece of tape over the pee holes on my boat motors since then when they are sitting. It is a shame to quit when you are almost done.

Pull the cover, take the pee tube off and start it. I'm sure its something simple like a clog.
The block should be warm to the touch when running, but not so hot you have to let go. Mine stops peeing regularly for no reason, no matter where I run it. It's got a new impeller and never gets hot. A quick shot of washdown pump up the peehole (that sounds painful) and it starts peeing like a champ every time.
The older Johnson/Evinrude 9.9s and 15s had a grommet that would swell at the pickup tube where it goes into the base of the powerhead. It would restrict water flow to the engine at low speeds. No other motor has an issue like that, at least that I'm aware of.

I just sold the same motor for $350. but I didn't have any issue with it. Just needed the money to purchase a 8hp Mercury 4-stroke. I used the $350. figure because that is what Stevens Marine was going to give me on a trade in.

Thanks for the replies guys, mine doesn't have a t-stat, and I've tried the blasting up the pee hole trick... nada.
It has absolutley boggled me. Like I said, ran like a champ, second pull when cold, up until last fall. Stabil'd the gas, disconnected it from the tank, ran the gas out of it in the driveway while sitting in a tub of water, hung it on the rack for the winter... first time on the boat, no pee.
Figured "impeller...no problem" so I replaced everything... the whole dang kit, gaskets and all, replaced lower unit oil, put her back together... NO PEE! Aargh!
I just have way to many other commitments to keep messing with this thing (and getting more frustrated). I don't use it that much anyways, I haven't put 10 hours on it since I bought it 6 years ago, I use my electric.

try one more time, I just had a 8hp OMC mess with me yesterday, everything new last summer put away, no water this year...checked everything all good, back blew the pee hole only a wisp of steam.
grab your brass jet pump flusher an a piece of 3/8 fuel line and drop the lower unit again hook it on the the copper tub and gently turn on the water it should flow no problem through the motor if not your onto it,
mine somehow was pluggeg right at the top of the tube where it enters the powerhead, I had a long 1/4 piece of all thread around I poked and pushed gently and sure as Kingfisher crackering off another fish I felt somewthing let go, reamed it a bit hooked the hose back up, bam boom water flow!!! put it back together and it waters right now.:twocents:
peace, B.

THis is exactly what I was thinking also... and the very last straw should it still not pee. I've got a length of brazing rod that will fit up that tube...
I'll update...

Just looking at a parts layout for 1989 Mercury 8hp and it shows that it has (or should have) a thermostat.

Use a piece of weed eater line to shove into the hole. Has worked every time for me. I even carry a piece all the time in the boat. Duck hunting and plugged water indicators go hand in hand.
