That's a contradiction. Kinda like "Central Intellegence Agency"
Unfortunately, it would be best to "bite the bullet" and head to Costco for a couple of blue top Optimas. Then get a Perko switch and follow the wiring diagram that comes with it.
Or to really do it right have a marine electrician wire it for you. Don't know where you are located, but an ifish member by the name of "Chuck's Marine" out of Camas has done work for me in the past. He did me right at a very reasonable cost.
I don't know if he's still lurking on this forum or not. I haven't seen anything with his name on it for quite awhile. But you can try and send him a PM.
Or post this on "Ask me! Electronics, autopilots, and hydraulics expert help" forum and Slow Drag-on will give you an answer.

:agree:I'll second Chuck's Marine Electronics as a good source of advice and service. The most recent contact info I have for him is cfchenet1@msn.com, but he will tell you to get a Blue Sea switch.

He found you anyway! Go with the batteries recommended, and yes, you should always have a switch. Now I fully recommend an ACR (auto charging relay) that isolates the batteries, while at the same time allowing for all to be charged all the time from any motor.

I've thought about adding a ACR, how is it wired into the system? do you have a diagram I can look at?

Here is a link to a instructions/drawings for the installation of the Blue Sea Systems ACR and switch combo that is most common: http://bluesea.com/files/resources/instructions/990310020.pdf
The optional starting isolation is great too. That protects your electronics from the starter(s) when cranking the motors over by isolating the house battery.

I am not a fan of Optimas. The Optimas I've had just haven't lasted, and the couple I've drained in the boat were never the same afterwards.
For starting batteries, Costco and Bi Mart have great name brand suppliers for their in house batteries and a great warranty. Their deep cycles work well too, but I think Trojan is on top when it comes to those.
