I stopped by the Wheatland Ferry last week to scope out the Willamette.
Pretty high just now, but looked fishable. I was hopin to catch some bass. What do you th ink? I did see a bass guides rig tied up there. Hmmm...
I need some help here. Lots of water...

Pretty high? Are you talking about the water level? The water is just about as low as it gets.

As for fishing that area right now look for current which is not hard to find in that area. Any little breaks in the current and you will find fish. The shore line just above the ferry has some nice breaks and usually hold a few fish.

I've caught lots of bass off the boat dock just below the ferry, on the east side of the river. Caught my first summer steelhead off that dock too.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but, is there a cable under the Wheatland Ferry? I was told by a close fishing freind to never cross it in my boat-17' Lowe sled with a tunnel and short shaft prop motor. I told him he was full of it but, I turned around "just in case" I've run with no problems in less than 2' of water-is he full of "it?"

I've run up and down over that many times, Canby ferry too. Don't drop anchor in the area though.

Yes there is a cable that runs under the ferry. Just take a ride on the ferry sometime and you will see it. It is a free ride if you walk onto the ferry. The cable sits pretty low in the water except for 20 yards in front and behind the ferry as it moves. Just don't cut right in front or behind the ferry and you will be just fine.

i've run across the Canby Ferry a couple times - was told the same thing "don't cross or you'll run into the cable" - but then we saw a dozen boats run across that section of water - everything from sleds to wake boats - nothing ran into the cable. You couldn't see the cable mid channel - we stayed away from the banks because the cable obviously comes up there. If it were a true navigation hazard, there'd be warning buoys and signage. Stick to the middle of the river and you should be fine.

Great small mouth fishing in that section of the river, been years since ive fished it, but we would fish the cornelds, taylors, and a few other backwater areas, some good size green 1's if you can find them!
