I'm new to fly fishing so this is probably a retarded question, but do fish actually hit an #18 or #20 fly? I've had things stuck in my teeth that were bigger than a #20! Man those things are tiny!!!

Oh yeah!!!! It will come when that is ALL they are hitting. Fun and frustrating at the same time!

Sometimes the bigger fish take some of the smallest flies. It gets real interesting when you have a 20" trout on a #20 fly tied on a 15' long 7X leader. :)

If I can't see it I can't fish it very well. :passout:

I have fished #20 on the Fall river many time. Matter of fact thats all that works at time.

#20 is my limit. I know a fellow routinely fishes down to a #28.

I've fished down to a #24. Sometimes that's all they're taking. Tough to tell when there are fish rising all around where you think your fly is, but still fun.

Must admit that I've not only done the sick thing of fishing a #26, but I also tie them on occasion. I prefer not tying anything smaller than a #22 (if I've been tying frequently), but sometimes it's just required...or I have a fever! :)

When I lived in new mexico fishing the san juan river, most of the fishing was done with 26 all the way to size 32 flys! Needed to get a threader box to get them on my 7x tippet.

Big fish small flys are alot of fun. I have had good results using my san juan box on the Deschutes too.
