I have a 16' Smokercraft Pro-Alaskan aluminum boat. What type and weight of anchor would you recommend? It will only be for lake fishing. Thanks in advance for any replies.

With the wind we get, I'd make sure you go a little on the heavy side. I rigged my boat with a heavy river anchor with about 4 foot of chain, 300' of rope, and an anchor puller float. The Motion Marine anchor nest is really nice as well.

We have a 15.5' Smokercraft Alaskan, and had been useing a 20lb Navy style anchor. It was used mainly for jigging, and got to be a little too much to bring in by hand. We just switched to a 10lb slip-ring mechanical anchor with 4' of heavy chain and have had good results so far...digs in pretty well. I don't know how it would do in a strong wind, we usually get off the lake in those type of conditions.

For lakes with a soft bottom I run 35# pyramids for & aft on my 17 1/2' boat. I fly fish so I almost always anchor broadside to the wind. Sometimes when the wind is rippin the 35's aren’t enough & I drop both off the bow. It helps to have mates with strong backs onboard to haul em in:D.
