Dad and I had originally planned to fish a Central Oregon lake for big, beautiful trout. We decided not to drive 8 hours for a day trip. Instead, we fished a local lake in the Mt. Hood area.
I'm not big on the westside lakes, but this particular body of water gets tons of stockers and has enough brooders to keep your attention.
I figured we'd at least get to relax in our float tubes and probably catch double digits of little fish. And we did. About 50 between the two of us. However, after a while of fishing for the little guys, I finally hooked into my first real fish...

As my luck would have it, I forgot to bring a net. So, getting this colorful buck onto my lap was not easy.
This was the closest I got.

Grabbed his tail like an idiot, put the cork handle of my rod in my mouth, then leaned over to grab his belly with my other hand. He darted off into the deep before I realized what happened.
I had to stop fishing for a few minutes to breath and regroup.
Then it was dad's turn, only he managed to land his...

I later had a chance to redeem myself...

The last fish of the day for me had the same color as the big one I lost.

So...
Four hours to the Cascade Lakes Highway or one hour down the highway to a Cascade lake?
I never thought I'd consider the latter.
