Making my first trip to Hagg tomorrow with the little guys. What should I have in the tackle box, and where to launch or fish? Have an 18' Jon boat with Minn Kota. I hear bangtails, (is that like a rooster tail) and green power bait and worms? Two Dads need a fishing break and want the kids to have a ball!!! Any ideas would be really great.
Thanks in advance.

any in-line spinner, bangtails, rooster tails, blue fox, mepps work really well. Assorted sizes from 1/16th oz to 1/2 oz will handle just about everything that eats spinners. Some curly tail jigs might be a good addition. Snelled baitholder hooks with splitshot and some snap swivels will handle your bait fishing needs - I'd go with size 12 thru 6 hooks. Might toss in some slip bobbers or easily adjusted floats just in case.

I'd put in at ramp C and try sain creek first. There's always something swimming over there. It's on the end of the lake where there's a wake restriction, so you shouldn't have to worry as much about the larger swells too, which is nice.

Buy some worms @ the lake stop store on your way out (and they got hot food, snacks, and cold drinks too) and you should be set for a days fishing.

Good luck.

Thanks MKwerx. I appreciate the note on the no wake area. Going afternoon so I'm sure we'll see some play boats. Gonna have the kids dig some worms this evening, but might supplement our supplies at the lake stop.

If you've never been to Hagg before, ramp C is on the northwest end of the lake. To get there, take the road over the dam (West Shore Drive, i believe is what it's called) and it'll take you there. It's a few miles from the east end of the dam. Ramp A is closer to the dam, but it's a shallower, smaller ramp, with limited parking. Ramp A is where the sheriff's boathouse is located. There is a small 'no wake' zone around ramp A - but it's a small one, and because it's immediately adjacent to the "go fast" half of the lake, it's much more prone to the swells from the skiiers and whatnot.

Ramp C has a large parking area, potties, usually a food vendor (good Gyros!) the boat rental, and the fishing pier is located just north of the docks. Lots of room to launch @ C compared to A.

The creek channel runs closer to the south side (far side) of the cove at Sain Creek, so I'd try that side of the cove first. Haven't been out there yet this year, so I'm not sure what the water level is like. Fishing that side of the cove will also keep some distance between you and the swimmers on the north side of the cove. Trolling up and down that cove flatline pulling spinners has produced really well for me in the past. Anything black, chartreuse, or pink is what I'd start with.

Well we had a good trip to Hagg. Wanted to get on the water fast, so we launched at the A ramp, and didn't stop for worms at the store. Fished Sain creek casting or jigging since kids are happier that way rather than trolling. Tried power bait, black spinners, white spinners, chartreuse spinners, rapalas, but all fish came on chartreuse jigs. Jonathan caught a 12" Largemouth, Nina caught a bluegill and a micro perch. Dad Kris caught another micro perch, Ben caught his sister's hair and pants and I caught zip. We had a blast.

Thanks mkwrx for the good tips.

Sounds fun - minus the hooking siblings part of course :)
