Anybody ever take apart one of the older OMC "stringer" outdrives? I'm trying to remove the lower unit. I removed the six obvious bolts, but the darn thing won't come free. I thought there'd only be a splined shaft that should slip out.

If there is a zinc with a fin on it check under it for an additional bolt ...
If that shaft was not greased like all get out the last time it went in
it will be a bear to remove ... :twocents:
Here is a link to schematic drawings ...Barney ...

Thanks for the link. You are correct, there was a hidden bolt under the water intake plate. I ended up getting a used OMC manual at Powels Books for 12 bucks.

I took the stern drive apart, expecting a broken shaft because it seemed the magnetic clutch coils were working. Turns out nothing mechanical was broken. Seems an intermittent short circuit/bad ground was keeping the gears from engaging. I cleaned the ground and replaced the connebctors on the "shift" wire, and everything seems normal. Just need to put the oil back in and take a test drive.
