Any news from Timothy Lake? Going to be fishing there next week.

Just got back from a three day stay. If you want to catch planters troll wolly buggers (sp?) slow around the dam area. We killed them that way. Most of them were nice fish 10 to 12 inches with some 14's showing up. We let them go, but could have easily limited out. If you are bank bound we did ok on worms with a marsh mellow. I really wanted to catch some brook trout, but couldn't find any. This is two years in a row that I haven't even caught one. For several years I would go there this time of year and get lots of them, concentrating where creeks enter the lake. Where did they go? Fished out? I thought they naturally reproduced, so plants aren't the issue. Maybe I'm wrong. Have fun! My family really enjoys Timothy Lake.

Thanks for the info, I was hoping someone would respond before I headed down next week. We will be bank fishing and slow trolling with a drift boat so we should be able to cover some ground. Again, thanks!

HWY 26 should be good to go, the roads are clear to Timberline Lodge... though I haven't actually driven to Timothy yet.

We camped at Oak Fork and had no luck with crawdads or trout from the campground. We moved down to the Oak Fork inlet and bottom fished the current with power bait and did well. The kids kept busy catching 12-14 inch rainbows. We also found deeper water towards the inlet that was rocky and caught a ton of crawdads down there. We used one trout per trap and a hot dog.

The wind was wipping all the time pushing our gear back towards the bank and creating alot of snags from the campground.

I thought it shows in the regs that you cannot use trout as any kind of bait...Am I wrong? Not trying to ruffle any feathers, just don't want to see a fellow fisherman get into trouble.

I will have to look now, this was my first time using a crawdad trap, so I had never tried to use trout for bait. Thanks for the heads up, I don't desire to be in any trouble.

I am only familiar with Oak Fork, campground was clean, sites are large and a bunch are lake front. Site #6 is huge if you have a big group.

I haven't been this year but I also say oak fork is the best. For the fishing all methods work pick the one you like. I prefer wedding ring and worm, lite gear on top or a fly but thats just how I role:excited: Try different things and you will find what works. I forgot the small frog or black and orange flat fish trolled very slow for brookies:throb: For the crawdadies use the fish guts and heads after you get some fish or cans of cheap cat food. Hope you have a great time and give us a report. I hope to make a trip soon.

I went up there a week ago... we flyfished and caught about 50-60 trout... most were stockers but a few were wild looking rock hard beauties that were 15-18 inches. Fished a bugger followed by a small black soft hackle. If its windy I would suggest wind drifting flies with a very small split shot to get your offering down 5-8ft - you will kill them. :twocents:

What kind of flys do well with your wind drifting method on Timothy?. Thanks for the info.

I've always done well with black or brown wooly buggers of all sizes. Not as much success with olive colored ones. Early morning/late day near the shallows anywhere from 8-15 ft of water is $$$. Fluro carbon/light line helps. Also a black/orange color works well, I guess maybe it imitates a crawday??? This method has caught many a 20 incher. Go get em!!!

The buggers I use are seal buggers - dark brown, burnt orange and black colors work well up there. I trail the buggers with 24# of leader tied to the buggers hook shank and a smaller wet fly that immitates any number of emergers... about size 12-14 wet fly with soft hackle in black or olive. I think the larger fly attracts a lot of fish and they end up biting the smaller trailing fly.

I have hooked fish up there in the bolders and stumps that have torn me up - never seen them but they must have been biguns! Largest fish I have landed up there have been in the 6# range.

I hope that helps

We went up there Friday (7-10) I think?? Anyway, we trolled wedding rings and worms and hook alot of fish! Landed 5 rainbows and 5 kokes for 2 rods in 3 hours, lost a bunch, 8-12 probably. We kept marking schools in about 40' of water and thought they had to be kokes, but I've never caught any up there before, so it was pretty cool to get a few of them.

Heading back next week! :excited:

hey the fishing sounds good. Thinking about heading up there tomorrow for an overnight trip. From what i've read, the oak grove campground sound like where i should be. I haven't been up there since i was a kid, probably like 16 or 17 years. I'll be in my float tube. my question is, should i just stick to throwing lures for trout, or would it be worth my effort to try to jig for kokes? Should i stay near river mouth and fish the "shallows" or deep drop out in the middle? Any info or tips would be much appreciated.

Myself, I would stick with the trout. I have never targeted Kokes up there, but what i've been told (and the few I've caught myself), they run pretty small (ie 8 inches is big). Shallows early and late day, but it also depends on the weather, winds, skies, etc. Deeper in the channel just as it enters the lake is better during the day, but the flats work well in the evening. Plenty of large boulders for them to hold under around the "mouth" so try targeting those as well.

One tip I've learned in the last couple years of fishing there...DON'T fish the day after a windy windy day up there. I don't know what it is, but if u fish after a good storm or just plain windy day, the bite is waaaaayyy off. I've put in 6 hour days up there circling the whole lake for1 or 2 fish after a wind event. Other days, 3-4 hours is an easy dozen or more dandy 13-16 inchers. Good luck.

Of the 5 kokes we got, the smallest was 13" and most were about 15" with one pig(so to speak) at 17".
Pretty decent I thought...

Just got back from Timothy, thewind was pretty bad and so was the fishing for me anyway. It was very windy most of the time I was there. I did get a few fish but the lake was pretty choppy. I did have a nice weekend with the family and that is what is important.

I'll second that theory about the stormy wind effect - one day they're starving and will hit anything, then the next they all disappear, like the wind dumps a ton of bugs & food in the water or something.

I've been up there 4 times this summer and my favorite campsite is the Hood View, #23. It is very nice to be able to wake up in the AM and see Mt Hood looming up outside the tent with a reflection over the lake, and the camp hosts there are very friendly.

If the fishing is poor, then make sure to bring a Mt. Bike and rally the 13 mile single-track trail that goes around the lake - LOTS of fun and great scenery.

Site 6 was nice, We could beach the bout rite behind the camp and its at the front of oakfork cove .That is were I got all my fish. The only bad part is #6 is next to the boat ramp(kinda loud). At 3am one nite the search and rescue guys were at the boat ramp searching for those teenagers that got lost. Wow are those guys loud. Glad they found the kids.

heading up in the am. Planning to troll some flies and maybe even get some spinners working. Probably just going to be a day out with the fam so if the fishing isn't great it shouldn't be a problem. (I have been on a decent tear of not catching much out of timothy for some time now)

I was up at timothy today, caught some fish but the fishing has definately slowed down since last month. all the planter bows I caught had that parasite on their fins and body. I don't know about the kokes since I didn't fish for them. For some reason the brooks don't, I caught a few of them and they were totally healthy. The brooks seem to be a lot more active right now than they have been in the past. atleast for me. I'll try to post some pics later tonight when I upload them from my phone.

Went on a solo boat camp trip last weekend and did real well trolling a piece of worm 5' behind a little weight. Fished over on the north side near my campspot. Most fish did have that "funky fungus" going on...Oh well, wasn't planning on keeping any anyway. I've logged alot of hours on "ol Tim" in the last 5 years and i'll be darned if i can catch any of the bigger fish. Love that place though, heading up there now with the little lady for a few days of R&R

last year around this time I went out early in the morning into about 40' of water, stopped the boat and dropped a worm down to the bottom with about 1 oz of lead. reeled up 2 cranks and put my rod in the holder. both mornings I did this I had only set my rod down for about 30 second before I had a 20"+ on. the trick is to do it before it gets windy.

Sorry about the noise. Radios, phones, etc. dont work well up there so generators and whistle blasts are pretty loud. Small price to pay, especially when its kids.

Was up there 7/28-8/2. We fished a few days but didn't find anything worth keeping. The crawdads were great. Last year someone pointed out that corn was good to use. We used corn and turkey legs, the turkey came in ahead of corn, but when we housed the dads in a large cage, the dads devoured the corn and filled their entrails with cream corn.
We were the group to the N or Meditation Point with the port-a-poty on a barge. For years we just got so sick of the poor outhouse conditions, we decided to bring our own for the week. With 22 people, outhouse conditions become a BIG deal.
